5  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Pope Francis: I could quit like Benedict or even die by 2017 on: 19-08-2014 01:33 PM

Pope Francis has suggested that he might one day resign the papacy like his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI did last year, which would make him the second consecutive Pope to do so after almost 600 years. He said this yesterday Aug. 18th while speaking with reporters on his way back to Rome after his state visit to South Korea.
"Some theologians may say this is not right, but I think this way. Let us think about what [Benedict XVI] said, "I have gotten old, I do not have the strength", it was a beautiful gesture of nobility, of humility and courage. But you could say to me, if you at some time felt you could not go forward, I would do the same."
Asked about his immense popularity, the Pope, 77, joked that he would probably die in the next 2/3 years so should not get too proud:
“I know this will last a short time, two or three years, and then to the house of the Father.” he said

6  Forum / The Buzz Central / Black Men Leave Their Ladies For Light Skin Women Once They Make it-Torrie Hart on: 19-08-2014 01:20 PM

Kevin Hart’s ex-wife Torrie Hart opened up in an interview with Cherise Nicole,on why she attacked him verbally for leaving her for his girlfriend who he just proposed to yesterday. She says black men always leave their day one ladies for light skinned women once they make it…
Honestly, it wasn’t all Kevin’s fault. I won’t say it was all his fault. Cause I look back now and I take ownership of some of the things I could’ve did differently. But, I did question my beauty. I did question like, wow, why is it that all black men, when they reach a certain level, they have to feel like they need someone of another race, or a different skin tone on their arm? And I’m just like, well why aren’t we looked at as beautiful? We’re beautiful black queens! You know what I mean? And I love my black men.You know and I support them 100% And I don’t feel like, once I make it, I gotta go to the other side! You know? And not saying, cause I’ve dated outside my race, I have, but I just don’t feel, like I need it on my arm to feel better about myself. And I just feel like, sometimes our men do.”

You know they say, she done went crazy! Or BITTER! And it’s like no, did you forget what you did? You know, but honestly it’s about how we react to what they do. And you know, it’s about changing your reaction. And I was hurt. I was deeply hurt, I knew this man, way before any of the celebrity and any of the fame. And we had children and I thought marriage was forever, but it’s not.”
I just have to accept this situation for what it is and move forward now. That’s when I felt like a load is off. You know I just felt free. I was like, you know I did a little bonfire in my back yard, I put his name on a list, with everybody else, who during that time, you know, who I thought had my back, but didn’t. You know, I was like, I forgive this person. I forgive this person. And I just did a list. And I went out to my backyard and I prayed on it. And I lit on fire and I buried it and gave it to God. And when I tell you honey, like chills. I really felt like freedom. I really felt free. So, that was just something I did. You learn what tools you need to get passed certain experiences that bring you down.”

9  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Fashola addresses reports of Ebola patients being unfairly treated on: 18-08-2014 12:23 PM

In a broadcast yesterday August 17th, Lagos state governor, Raji Fashola debunked reports of Ebola patients in Lagos state-provided Isolation wards being maltreated. While appreciating the concerns of relatives and friends of the victim, Governor Fashola said they are receiving the best care health..
"I appreciate the concerns and anxiety that friends and relatives of sick victims must be going through. I assure you that our thoughts and prayers are with you. I understand that you expect special care for your loved ones, and this is to be expected. I assure you that they are receiving the best care that the experts have recommended to us, given the circumstances; because they say that this is the best way to proceed especially because experienced personnel in Ebola containment and management have always been a challenge" Fashola said. Dear Lagosians,
As you must now be aware, we are facing perhaps our biggest challenge to public health and the safety of human lives at this moment with the discovery of the Ebola virus in our state.

This poses a threat to the primary purpose of our Government whi...ch is to save lives.

This address has become necessary to respond to a series of text messages, e-mails and telephone calls that I have received in order to reiterate some of what you may already know, to share information about what you may not know, and to keep everybody safe.

This has become the moreso in the light of allegations that are making the rounds, either that victims are being neglected, orthat a useful drug or vaccine is being rejected or that there is a shortage of funds.

I wish to state very categorically that none of these is true.

What is true is that we should perhaps never have been in this situation, but we are now in it.

What is true is that the Ebola virus did not break outfrom within Nigeria, it was imported into Nigeria.

What is true is that we have followed all the contacts that we know who have had primary and secondary contacts with the patient who imported the virus into our state, or with people who had contact with him.

Because we had to react to an unexpected situation, we had to react in a proper and methodical way, according to acceptable global health standards.

I can now tell you that in the last one week, with the help and advice of our technical partners, such as the World Health Organisation, the Centre for Disease Control and the Medecins Sans Frontiers, who have tracked this virus and studied it for decades, our response is a lot better than when the news first broke; and our capacity is increasing daily.

Although we have suffered very painful losses of lives, I think it is fair to say that we are not yet at an epidemic stage and we are determined to do everything not to get to that stage; because of the grave consequences to the safety of human lives.

We have provided information to the public on all state-owned media, while the private media have commendably joined in this effort. There is also information available on the social media platform.

Since Monday last week, precisely on the 11th of August, I commenced meetings on an almost daily basis with stakeholders in our society, religious leaders, traditional rulers, market men and women, community development associations, to brief them of the risk, to re-assure them that we are daily gaining control, to advise them and all of you to be cautious but not to panic.

My view of the fact that we are gaining control, is informed by verifiable facts that I receive daily from our health workers that all the cases of those who have either unfortunately died, or those who are sick, and those who are contacts under surveillance are directly traceable to the imported case.

There is also now the news that a confirmed victim has fully recovered, which reinforces the advice from our experts that it is not an automatic death sentence.

This is encouraging news from which our containment strategy can profit greatly; because it means that we do not have any case of unknown origin, which will raise the risk of an epidemic.

Dear Lagosians, the challenge of managing the Ebola virus is big but our resolve to contain and defeat it is bigger.

That resolve is demonstrated by the courage shown by the first set of health workers at state and federal levels who stood up to be counted, and the leadership of the state and federal Ministries of Health with the support of our international partners.

In spite of fear, they stood up to be counted at a time of grave danger.

We should salute their courage, professionalism, patriotism and humanitarian disposition.

They are the heroes and heroines that we have looked for for a long time. I cannot thank them enough.

While we are doing everything to assure their safety and to give them confidence to proceed; I want to passionately appeal that we must not do anything to distract them or demotivate them.

What they need now is our encouragement and support to gain even stronger control of the situation.

What they do not need are rumours and the distractions that they can bring with them.

I appreciate the concerns and anxiety that friends and relatives of sick victims must be going through. I assure you that our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I understand that you expect special care for your loved ones, and this is to be expected.

I assure you that they are receiving the best care that the experts have recommended to us, given the circumstances; because they say that this is the best way to proceed especially because experienced personnel in Ebola containment and management have always been a challenge.

What will be helpful to the situation now is additional medical personnel, who are willing to volunteer to join hands with those on the frontline.

But the experts also caution that those who sign up cannot immediately start to participate in the isolation ward, where sick people are being treated, no matter how qualified and experienced they are.

15  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Unarmed teen Michael Brown was shot six times, Autopsy reveals on: 18-08-2014 09:50 AM

Michael Brown, the unarmed 18 year old black boy who was killed by a police officer in St. Louis on Saturday August 9th, sparking protests around the nation, was shot at least six times, including twice in the head, a preliminary private autopsy performed on Sunday found.
One of the bullets entered the top of Brown’s skull, suggesting his head was bent forward when it struck him and caused a fatal injury, according to Dr. Michael M. Baden, the former chief medical examiner for the City of New York, who flew to Missouri on Sunday at the family’s request to conduct the separate autopsy. It was likely the last of bullets to hit him, he said. Continue...

Brown was also shot four times in the right arm, he said, adding that all the bullets were fired into his front. Contradicting earlier reports by eyewitnesses that he was shot in the back as he ran from the officer
The bullets did not appear to have been shot from very close range because no gunpowder was present on his body. However, that determination could change if it turns out that there is gunshot residue on Mr. Brown’s clothing, to which Dr. Baden did not have access.
Dr. Baden said that while Mr. Brown was shot at least six times, only three bullets were recovered from his body. But he has not yet seen the X-rays showing where the bullets were found, which would clarify the autopsy results. Nor has he had access to witness and police statements.
Dr. Baden provided a diagram of the entry wounds, and noted that the six shots produced numerous wounds. Some of the bullets entered and exited several times, including one that left at least five different wounds.
“This one here looks like his head was bent downward,” he said, indicating the wound at the very top of Mr. Brown’s head. “It can be because he’s giving up, or because he’s charging forward at the officer.”
He stressed that his information does not assign blame or justify the shooting.
“We need more information; for example, the police should be examining the automobile to see if there is gunshot residue in the police car,” he said.
Dr. Baden, 80, is a well-known New York-based medical examiner, who is one of only about 400 board-certified forensic pathologists in the nation. He reviewed the autopsies of both President John F. Kennedy and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and has performed more than 20,000 autopsies himself. - Huffington Post

16  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Ebola Death Toll Rises To 1,145 Globally — WHO on: 18-08-2014 09:28 AM

The death toll from the worst ever outbreak of Ebola has risen to 1,145, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has said, even as 76 new deaths were reported in two West African states already hit by the epidemic.

According to the UN health agency, a total of 152 confirmed, probable and suspected new cases of the deadly hemorrhagic fever were reported in two days, in Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone, bringing the total for the outbreak to 2,127.
Meanwhile, Minister for Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu has met with the concerned friends and families of the Ebola afflicted victims following their complaints about the welfare of their wards.
“As you know, we have a serious situation and anyone that has a relative is bound to be anxious, and when relatives complain, we must listen,” said Chukwu.
He admitted that all the complaints were being investigated, adding that he had been briefed on the development and recommendations were being put in place.
“I’m a doctor myself and I’m behaving now more as a doctor than as a Minister. Normally, when relatives of patients complain, I want to see them, working together, sometimes they do not have the full information, and who knows, sometimes they themselves can add valued to what we are doing,” he said.
According to him, the Federal Government is open to suggestions and contributions.
“We knew the former place was only temporary and we knew we could do better and that was why the Lagos State government made every effort to get the new isolation unit ready. Penultimate Friday, I visited the Lagos State Governor and he personally assured me the new facility will be ready this week. He kept to his word. Of course as soon as it was ready it was made available and the patients have been moved to the new facility, which is better than where they were before.”
Pointing out that no stone was being left unturned, he said hopefully all shortcomings they may have observed were actually being addressed by the new place.
“I had to personally discuss with the Chief Medical Director of LUTH, Prof Akin Oshibogun, when I was told they were not satisfied with facilities for critical care. That is why we have reinforced what is available. New equipment has been put in to reassure the patients that we would do everything humanly possible to keep them alive and to return them to their families and work,” the Minister explained.

20  Forum / Sports / IOC bars Ebola-region athletes from some events @Youth Olympic Games on: 16-08-2014 10:11 PM

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) yesterday Friday August 15th said that it's prohibiting young athletes from the Ebola-affected region of West Africa including Nigeria, Guinea, Liberia and Sierre Leone from participating in certain events at the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China, which will begin today August 16th and run till the 28th.

From Reuters

Athletes from West Africa, where authorities are battling an outbreak of the Ebola virus, will not be allowed to compete in combat sports or in the swimming pool, as it is impossible to rule out the risk of potential infection, the IOC and the Nanjing Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee said in a joint statement.
The rules will prevent a total of three athletes from the region from competing in those events, the statement said.
Those from the affected region competing in other sports will undergo regular temperature checks and physical assessments throughout the games, which begin on Saturday, the two committees said.
"We regret that due to this issue some young athletes may have suffered twice, both from the anguish caused by the outbreak in their home countries and by not being able to compete in the Youth Olympic Games," the IOC and organisers said.

The death toll from the world's worst outbreak of Ebola stood on Wednesday at 1,069, the majority of them in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia, the World Health Organisation said.
