3  Forum / Politics / Pres Jonathan Should Arrest Modu Sheriff, Gen Ihejirika Now APC on: 3-09-2014 07:38 AM

President Goodluck Jonathan should arrest former governor of Borno State Ali Modu Sheriff and former chief of army staff Lt. Gen Azubuike Ihejirika and take them to the International Court of Justice (ICC) for allegedly sponsoring the Boko Haram terrorists as claimed by the Australian negotiator, Dr Stephen Davis.
The call was made by the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr John Odigie-Oyegun, while reacting to the interview granted by the Australian negotiator on Arise Television and Sahara Reporters last week.
Davis, who claimed he was appointed by President Goodluck Jonathan to help secure the release of the over 200 girls who were abducted by Boko Haram on April 14, disclosed that both Sheriff and Ihejirika were among the sponsors of the terrorists and argued that, until the sponsors are arrested, the war against terror would remain unabated.
Although the two prominent citizens have denied the allegation, the APC leadership dismissed their defence as useless and urged Jonathan to bring them to book. It said the revelation has vindicated the party on the allegation that it is the sponsor of terrorism.
Odigie-Oyegun stated: Now that the cat has been let out of the bag and the real sponsors of Boko Haram have been exposed, we hope President Jonathan will summon the courage to do the right thing: hand over the identified Boko Haram sponsors to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for investigation and prosecution.

There is no doubt that Boko Haram has committed crimes against humanity in its scorched-earth campaign against unarmed citizens, and the most appropriate body to investigate and try the sects sponsors is the ICC.
According to Article 17 of the Rome Statute that set up the ICC, and to which Nigeria is signatory, the ICC is a court of last resort, expected to exercise its jurisdiction only if states themselves are unwilling or unable genuinely to investigate and prosecute international crimes.
In view of the fact that the alleged Boko Haram sponsors are either members of the ruling party or friends of the president, it is clear that the PDP-led federal government is unwilling and unable to try them, hence our call.
Odigie-Oyegun, who spoke after allowing journalists to watch the video of the interview granted by Davis, assured the populace that the matter would not be swept under the carpet: Nigerians can be rest assured that the APC will not allow this issue to be swept under the carpet. Now that it is clear that the PDP is behind Boko Haram for the sole purpose of winning next years presidential election, Nigerians must prevail on the PDP and the Presidency to urgently end this insurgency and the daily killing and maiming of innocent Nigerians!

8  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Suspected Ebola Victim Dies In Abuja Hospital on: 2-09-2014 07:51 AM

A patient suspected to have been infected with the deadly Ebola virus has died at the Asokoro Hospital Abuja.

The suspected patient, who exhibited symptoms similar to those of persons infected with the virus died at the hospital last Friday. Following the death of the patient, the Accident and Emergency Unit of the hospital where the patient was being treated has been cordoned off and the accident and emergency unit has been temporarily relocated to the General outpatient unit (GOPD). Similarly, a list of all medical staff who had come in contact with the patient has been compiled and they are all under surveillance.

According to a statement by the FCT Health and Human Services Secretariat, on Thursday August 28, 2014 when the symptoms were observed, blood samples of the patient were taken for examination at the designated FCT Ebola testing laboratory which happens to be within the Hospital premises and the epidemiology unit of the Public Health Department of the secretariat was notified and the unit had responded.

The statement signed by the secretariat’s head of public relations, Badaru Yakassai, explained that the results of the Ebola test were being expected from the laboratory four days later (yesterday), before the patient died.
“The Family Medicine unit of Asokoro District Hospital suspected Ebola disease in a patient on admission at the Accident and Emergency unit on the 28th of August 2014 and immediately isolated the patient. Strict infection control measures were immediately instituted. Blood sample was then taken to the designated FCT Ebola testing laboratory which happens to be within the hospital premises. The epidemiology unit of Public Health Department of the Health and Human Services Secretariat was notified and their response was immediate. The results of the Ebola test was being expected from the laboratory four days later, on Monday the 1st of September 2014.
The case also served as a drill case to test the preparedness of the hospital to manage and contain the Ebola disease. Clinical assessment however did not reveal any history of contact or travel. However in view of the high index of suspicion, isolation and strict infection control measures were continued and the unit was condoned off. Unfortunately, the patient died the next day, Friday 29th August 2014. The accident and emergency unit was temporarily relocated to the General Outpatient Unit (GOPD). A list of all medical staff who had come into contact with the patient has been compiled and they are all under surveillance,” Yakassai explained in the statement.
The secretariat however advised residents of the territory not to panic as a case of Ebola has not been confirmed at the hospital, adding that the measures that have been put in place are only precautionary in the interest of public safety.

10  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Shock as Black Nigerian woman gives birth to white baby (Photos) on: 1-09-2014 09:39 PM

A mother has beaten odds of a million-to-one by giving birth to a baby who appears to be of a different race.Catherine Howarth, 32, from Milton Keynes, is Nigerian by heritage, and so was, at first, a little taken aback when she saw her son Jonah for the first time.

With his pale skin, green eyes and light brown hair, Jonah, now three months old, looks like any other new-born baby - but, when seen in his mother's arms, his uniqueness is obvious.
Recalling the moment she delivered Jonah in Milton Keynes Hospital on June 1, his mother told the Sunday Mirror:

‘The midwife looked at me and looked back down at Jonah and then at me again and couldn’t believe it.'Some children get darker after a few weeks when the skin colour they will have for life starts to become obvious. But you can see from the colour at the tips of their ears what that Jonah was fully white. We have been told I must have been carrying a recessive gene. My parents were from Nigeria and, for as far back as anyone can remember; my family have all been black.’
Husband Richard, 34, who works as a medical recruitment consultant, was equally as shocked when he first saw his son, who is the couple’s first child together.
The colour of Jonah’s skin is of no concern - Jonah being a healthy and happy baby is what matters.’
The couple have been told that they are unlikely to have another white baby if they have further children, due to the extremely rare combination of genes needed.

The phenomenon is not totally unheard of however,in 2010, parents Benjaman and Angela Ihegboro – both black - introduced their white-skinned, blonde-haired daughter Nmachi to the world...Below

11  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Bizarre: Meet The Brazilian Man Born With His Head Upside-Down on: 1-09-2014 09:33 PM

A man born with physical disabilities so severe his head is Upside-down has defied the odds to become an inspirational public speaker. Claudio Vieira de Oliveira, 37, was born with his neck folded back on itself, as well as badly deformed legs and almost no use of his arms and hands. Doctors told his mother to stop feeding him as a newborn as they believed he had no chance of survival. But Claudio from Monte Santo, Brazil, has overcome his extreme disadvantages to graduate as an accountant and become a public speaker. Continue…

“Since I was a child I’ve always liked to keep myself busy and work – I don’t like to depend totally on other people. I do a bit of accounting, research for clients and consulting. I have learned to turn on the TV, pick up my cell phone, turn on the radio, use the internet, my computer – I do it all by myself.” he said.

Claudio types with a pen held in his mouth, operates phones and a computer mouse with his lips and has specially made shoes that allow him to move around town. His determined independence saw him succeeding at school and qualifying as an accountant from the State University of Feira de Santana.
When Claudio was born, doctors told his mother Maria Jose he would not be able to survive. Maria Jose said:

“People started saying ‘the baby is going to die’ because he could barely breathe when he was born. Some people would say: ‘Don’t feed him, he is already dying’. But there’s only happiness now. Claudio is just like any other person – that’s how he was raised in this house. We never tried to fix him and always wanted him to do the normal things everyone else does. That’s why he is so confident. He is not ashamed of walking around in the street – he sings and he dances.”

At eight years old, Claudio, who had previously been carried everywhere, began to walk on his knees. His family had to change the floor of the house so he could walk around without injuring himself. Claudio’s bed, plugs and lights had to be made lower so that he could do things for himself without asking for help. He cannot use a wheelchair because of his unusual shape, making it hard for him to be independent outside the home – but he begged his mother to be allowed to go to school and learn with the other children. Doctors have recently diagnosed him with a rare condition called congenital arthrogryposis.

They believe he has multiple joint contractions in his legs and arms which mean they cannot extend properly. Claudio said: “Throughout my life I was able to adapt my body to the world. Right now, I don’t see myself as being different. I am a normal person. I don’t see things upside-down. This is one of the things I always talk about in my interventions as a public speaker. “Nowadays it’s much easier to deal with the public, I’m not afraid of it anymore and I can say that I am a professional, international public speaker and that I receive invitations from all over the world.”
