An uncle to the incumbent governor of Rivers state has been murdered.

Mr Sabinus Ordu, a resident of Ubima town in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers state was murdered on Monday by suspected hired killers.

News of the victim’s mur­der was broken yesterday, by the state Commissioner for Information, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, at a media brief­ing in Port Harcourt. She disclosed that the octoge­narian was assassinated last Monday while his mutilated body was discovered in the bush.

According to her, the de­ceased was a career civil servant and vice principal of Community Secondary School, Aluu, also in Ikwerre Local Government Area.

It was gathered that the deceased was reportedly trailed by unknown assail­ants when he went to check some of his traps in the bush.

“The late Mr. Sabinus Ordu, who is an uncle to Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, returned home in the afternoon from CSS, Aluu where he was the vice principal and told the boy staying with him that he was going into the bush to check his traps after having a meal.

“He then mounted his mo­torcycle and left for the bush, but did not return until it was night. At about 8.00pm, the boy raised an alarm which attracted the villagers. A search party was sent to look for him. “The search party, on their way into the bush, saw the victim’s motorcycle by the bush path, and im­mediately went into the bush where they found his lifeless body, mutilated with several machete cuts. The matter has been reported to the police at Elele, while his remains have been deposited at the morgue”, she stated.

The Commissioner for Information further said that the state government was concerned about the ugly de­velopment, especially as the 2015 general elections were fast approaching, even as she called on the police to step in and ensure that the perpe­trators of the heinous crime were brought to book.

“We are concerned about this development, especially because these are obvious signs as we get closer to the general elections. We don’t want to point fingers or cast aspersions, but Mr. Ordu was only a civil servant and a peace-loving man. He was a simple citizen and was not into government contracts.

“Perhaps, his only crime was that he is related to Governor Amaechi. We are calling on the police to bring Mr. Ordu’s killers to book. This cannot be another mys­tery murder; this cannot be another unresolved murder case. The people of Rivers State will continue to re­sist the murder of innocent people”.

She added: “God alone gives life and only God can take a life. This is a crime against the innocent and the poor”. Responding to ques­tions from journalists on the heinous act, Semenitari, said the ugly development would not be unconnected with the politics in the state.

“At this point, we are un­willing to cast any aspersion. We hope it is not politically motivated. We can’t adduce any reason for the murder. Every indicator points to the strong likelihood that this was politically motivated”, she said.

Finally, we have to remember that Ebola isn’t West Africa’s only problem. Tens of thousands die there each year from diseases like AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis. Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea have among the highest maternal mortality rates in the world. Because people are now too afraid of contracting Ebola to go to the hospital, very few are getting basic medical care. In addition, many health care workers have been infected with Ebola, and more than 120 have died. Liberia has only 250 doctors left, for a population of four million.
This is about humanitarianism and self-interest. If we wait for vaccines and new drugs to arrive to end the Ebola epidemic, instead of taking major action now, we risk the disease’s reaching from West Africa to our own backyards."
Ebola epidemic in West Africa has the potential to alter history as much as any plague has ever done.There have been more than 4,300 cases and 2,300 deaths over the past six months. Last week, the World Health Organization warned that, by early October, there may be thousands of new cases per week in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Nigeria. What is not getting said publicly, despite briefings and discussions in the inner circles of the world’s public health agencies, is that we are in totally uncharted waters and that Mother Nature is the only force in charge of the crisis at this time.

A 45 year-old farmer ,John Ogunji, has allegedly killed his wife, Christianah Ogunji, in Okitipupa, Ondo State after an argument over sharing of a bag of garri (cassava flour).
Problem started, after the farmer suggested that the bag of garri be shared equally between the couple.
The wife allegedly did not not accept the idea.
source gathered that before the incident that led to the murder, a similar quarrel had occurred between the duo. The suspect is presently being detained at the state Police headquarters in Akure.

The ugly incident occurred at Obatedo village in Omotosho , Okitipupa Local Government Area of the state. Her alleged effrontery to snub the husband led to a hot argument that later resulted in free for all.

The 39-year old deceased according to report, said that the bag of garri should be intact and not shared because of their quarrel. She was said to have insisted that it was improper for a couple to separate the food in the house. The suspect was reportedly irked by the stance of the wife and consequently hit her on the head with a plank.
Source learnt that the deceased died before she was rushed to the hospital for medical treatment.
Police Image Maker, Mr. Wole Ogodo said the suspect had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigative Department in Akure for further investigation.
Ogodo pointed out that the suspect would soon be charged to court after the completion of the investigation.
