1  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / GOODWORK! Lagos to Deploy Health Workers to Sierra Leone over Ebola on: 20-10-2014 08:23 AM

The Lagos State Government on Sunday said it was finalising arrangements to deploy some health workers who helped in the containment of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in the state to Sierra Leone.
NAN reports that the Governor, Babatunde Fashola, made the announcement in Ikeja while speaking at a programme to commemorate the 2,700 days of his administration in office. The governor said the
health workers were to replicate the state’s containment strategies in Sierra-Leone.

Mr. Fashola said although Nigeria was, as of now, free from the disease, there was still the risk of new infections from cross-border movements. He, therefore, said the state’s planned mission to Sierra Leone was not only to assist the country to overcome the great health challenge, but also reduce the risk of the disease to countries within the sub-region. Mr. Fashola said:
“Lagos is free from Ebola, Nigeria is free from Ebola. But that does not mean there cannot be another case. For as long as people are moving from countries to countries, the risk of infections is still there. That is why I appeal to the Federal Government to continue to scrutinise people travelling into Nigeria from land, sea and air from regions where the problem is still ravaging.
That is why some of the things the commissioner for health will be announcing very soon is the arrangements we are making to send some of our health workers and volunteers to go and help out in Sierra Leone. That is the only way we, the whole of Africa and the World can be safe.”

2  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / SCARY!! Police Recover Severed Head of Slain Youth in Lagos on: 20-10-2014 08:22 AM

The police have recovered the severed head of a 28-year-old man, Ibikunle Tunde, who was killed during a cult clash in Mushin and Fadeyi areas of Lagos State last week.
The head was recovered on Ojelade Street, Fadeyi, on Thursday by security operatives from the Alakara Police Station. The deceased, who had been linked to a murder last Monday, was killed in an apparent reprisal.
A resident said:
“In the morning of Monday last week, a lottery agent, Sheriff Alasia, was killed. Tunde, who is believed to have been among the killers, was attacked on the night of that very day. He was shot several times while his head was chopped off. His body was recovered by the police but his head remained missing for almost four days. The killers were playing with the head in the neighbourhood and were reported to the police. On Thursday night, policemen came to Ojelade Street to recover the head.”

PUNCH Metro had reported that at least three people were killed during a clash involving two rival cult groups in the area. The groups, Toba’s boys and Toheeb’s gang, have been embroiled in a long time supremacy fight which has left scores dead from both sides in the recent past.

Trouble had  started last week when some hoodlums belonging to the Toba group went on the rampage over the detention of their leader, Oloruntoba Joel. They were said to have torn posters belonging to the All Progressives Congress because the party did not intervene in what they felt was a persecution of their leader.

Hoodlums belonging to Toheeb’s group were said to have led some policemen to the stronghold of Toba’s gang to make arrests for the rampage. In the process, gunshots were reportedly fired at some of the hoodlums, which made them reinforce to repel the attack. In the ensuing attacks and gun battle which lasted for about four days, three people lost their lives.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, told PUNCH Metro on Sunday that Tunde’s head had been recovered.
“I can confirm to you that our men have recovered the head,” he said.

A source told PUNCH that the severed head had been sewed to the rest of the body.

5  Forum / Religion / "Church should not fear change" - Pope Speaks On Accepting Homosegxwality on: 20-10-2014 08:11 AM

Pope Francis hope for the Catholic church to embrace gay unions failed after the more conservatives in the Roman Catholic church refused to veto the final document that the catholic church should learn to respect the positive aspects of gay couples because, they have "Gifts and qualities" to offer the church .They however changed the initial document to accept that men and women of homosegxwal tendencies must be welcomed with respect and sensitivity and should not suffer from discrimination .

Proposals to allow divorced and remarried Catholics to receive communion were also defeated.

The gay rights Catholics have expressed disappointment that  at the end of the two week assembly known as  synod, the church failed to welcome them with openness like they do to straight people...

Three controversial articles, including the final version of one concerning gays won an absolute majority but failed to get the two-thirds vote needed for a broad consensus.

At the final closing ceremony yesterday, Pope Francis who wants a more merciful and less rigid church said in regards to the rejection of change by some bishops
"God is not afraid of new things. That is why he is continuously surprising us, opening our hearts and guiding us in unexpected ways," "the Church is called to waste no time in seeking to bind up open wounds and to rekindle hope in so many people who have lost hope. The church has to respond courageously to whatever new challenges come our way"
Liberal bishops such as Mgr Georges Pontier, President of the French Bishops’ Conference told Reuters
“If a same-sex couple has been in a relationship for 30 years, I can’t call that nothing,”

Cardinal Reinhard Marx, Archbishop of Munich.said..
“Exclusion is not the language of the Church,”“You cannot tell Catholics living in irregular family situations, ‘you are a second-rate Christians’.”
6  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / How 6 year old boy disappeared from Lagos home (Photo) on: 20-10-2014 08:08 AM

Six-year-old Jeremiah Abasi was living with his parents in Ihiala area of Anambra State when his aunt, Onyebuchi Chibogu, decided to bring him to Lagos State to continue his education. However, in less than four months on Adidas Street, Olodi-Apapa area of the state, Jeremiah went missing after reportedly running an errand for his aunt’s neighbour.

His mother, Chika Abasi, told Punch that findings by the family revealed he was kidnapped. She said she was in the village when she got a phone call that Jeremiah was missing.
She said,
“I was in shock. I called my husband at Onitsha, and he asked me to travel down to Lagos to know what exactly happened. It was when I arrived Lagos that I learnt that the man who kidnapped my son was a stranger in their compound; he had taken a snapshot of my son two weeks earlier with his phone, while the boy was half naked.
“I just want them to tell me what has happened to him. It is better for me to know my son is dead than the pain they are making me go through.”
Jeremiah’s brother, Miracle, who was holidaying in Lagos, said the victim was with a neighbour, identified only as Ijeoma, and her boyfriend, Ogbonna.Miracle, 15, explained that he had also been sent to buy a stick of cigarette for Ogbonna, but when he returned, he could not find Ogbonna and his brother. He said,
“On August 22, around 6pm, I came back from the field where I went to play football.I met my brother at home and I called him to the backyard for us to go and take a bath, but he refused, saying he wanted our aunt to come back before he would do that.
“When I finished, I saw Mr. Ogbonna taking a picture of my brother with his phone. I asked him to also take my picture, but he showed me a photo of my brother he had taken two weeks earlier. He gave me N20 to buy a cigarette for him, but when I came back, I didn’t see my brother again or the man.”
Miracle said he noticed that the door was shut and he threw the cigarette away.Around 11pm, the news had spread that Jeremiah could not be found.A crowd of people were said to have begun blaming the 15-year-old for leaving his younger brother at home.
“I tried to explain to the crowd that my brother was with Ogbonna and his girlfriend, but Ogbonna, who suddenly returned with his girlfriend, shouted me down and threatened to beat me” Miracle added.
Chibogu, told our correspondent the matter was reported at the Tolu Police Station and the two suspects were arrested.

A police source confirmed to our correspondent that a picture of the missing boy was indeed seen in the phone of one of the suspects, but said it was not enough to conclude that he kidnapped the boy.
