1  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Boko Haram Releases Abducted Women in Adamawa on: 24-10-2014 11:10 PM

There are reports that Boko Haram insurgents, who abducted about 50 women and girls from two border villages between Adamawa and Borno states have freed the women among their captives.

This was disclosed in an interview by villagers, who spoke on the issue with newsmen on the telephone from their hide-outs. They however, said that the exact number of those released could not be ascertained, but that no fewer than 45 girls were still being detained.

Vanguard reports that according to the villagers, the women and girls were abducted from Waga
Mangoro which was between Gwoza in Borno and Madagali in Adamawa states. Relatives of some of the abducted women who were later released by the insurgents also, told newsmen in Yola that some of the girls have been turned to cooks while others were married off immediately to some of the insurgents.

A relative to the one of the women who spoke on the condition of anonymity said; ”Initially, the insurgents captured 80 girls and women whom they later loaded into their vans and zoomed off into the bushes.

Later in the night, the insurgents separated the elderly women from the girls and released the women, who are now languishing in the forest because they could not relocate the towns because they were razed down by the insurgents.

“We are confused that hours after the so called cease fire agreement between the Federal Government and Boko Haram insurgents, our girls are still being abducted by the insurgents.
“We are at a loss about government’s insincerity on the whole issue and we urge them to rescue our daughters without further delay as we are ready to die searching for our missing ones.”

2  Forum / The Buzz Central / His friends have deserted us – Sonny Okosuns’ widow on: 24-10-2014 10:57 PM

It's been six years since legendary musician, Sunny Okosun passed on, but his wife still misses him dearly! Read her touching story as told to SUN newspaper below:

How has it been without Sonny?
It has not been easy because I lost a very good friend of mine, husband, father and brother. He was everything to me and indeed, he represented so many things in my life. Whenever I think back, it has never been easy at all.

Can you take us back to how you both met?
We meet 34 years ago on my way to pick my nephew from school. I was standing at the bus stop when he pulled over right in my front and offered me a lift, insisting that I must enter. The end of it was that after much persuasion, I joined him in the car and we had a chat on our way.
What were the charming words he said to you that made you give him a second thought?
He was somebody who would not take no for an answer. At the beginning, I was not interested but he insisted and continued to mount pressure on me. On a second thought, I looked at him as a man who is so caring, one who knew what he wanted and was pressing very hard to get what he wanted too. At that point I considered him.
Was he a well-pronounced star when you meet him?
Yes.
Ok, you knew him as the popular Sunny Okosuns?
Yes.
I am thinking that as a celebrity that he was, you shouldn’t have put him through all the stress. Why did you not just accept his good offer?
Well, I did not know why, but I know that at the beginning, it was not love at first sight, so I took my time to consider his offer. Then gradually I started falling in love, because he would not let go despite my resistance.
What was the greatest gift he ever gave you; I mean that very one you cherish the most?
Christ and salvation.
What are your challenges right now?
Well, aside he not been here, a lot of his friends have deserted us. We were expecting them to be around us and try to console and encourage us.
Aside that, is there any other thing?
Nothing else. We have found solace in God now and we thank God that the church is still on.

Let us talk about his church because I am wondering, how come his church is growing bigger even when he is not here anymore?
Yes, after his death, the mantle of leadership was handed down to me.
When people come for counselling on similar issues just as the one you may be facing, do you use yourself as reference for them?
Yes, I do that most times, but then, I use wisdom in doing that, while using the Bible as a reference. You know that there are great men and women of God in the bible who are good examples to emulate, so I use them to encourage those who come for counselling and I do encourage them to hold forth. I do tell them that in case of any bad along their ways, they must not give up, give in or throw in the towel.
How do you feel when you hear his song paying on the street?
I feel very happy that his memory lives on.

5  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / WHAT! TB Joshua Avoiding Court Case, Lagos Magistrate Demands Appearance on: 24-10-2014 10:48 PM

The founder of Synagogue Church Of All Nation in Ikotun Lagos, Temitope Balogun Joshua has been accused of trying to avoid questioning at the court over a disaster that killed over 100 people at his church last month.

Balogun has been ordered to show up before the coroner inquest set up by Lagos State Government on November 5th, 2014.

116 people, mostly South Africans died when the building serving as a guest house of the church collapsed on September 12.

TB Joshua had initially linked the tragedy to a strange aircraft wandering above the building shortly before it fell. A video was released by the church on social media platforms showed the plane allegedly hovering around the building before its collapse.

To ascertain the actual cause of the collapse, the Lagos State Government on 26 September, set up an inquest to investigate the incident.

The coroner, Magistrate O.A Komolafe and a team of interested parties had last week visited the scene of the incident to have a first hand understanding of the incident.

At today’s sitting of the inquest, the coroner stated that TB Joshua must appear before the inquest to give a first hand testimony about what happened during the building collapse.

Komolafe gave the order after two witnesses from the Lagos State Fire Service and Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Adebayo Musiliu Olayinka and Bamidele Wasiu testified respectively before the inquest.

Insisting that TB Joshua must personally appear before the inquest, Komolafe said: “The court has summoned him, let him come and tell us what he knows. He cannot sit over there and be sending words to us that he cannot come. The court has said that for the purpose of what we are doing that he should come over”.

An official of the Lagos State Fire Service, Adebayo Musiliu, while testifying before the court said he observed that the building did not collapse as a result of explosion.

Musiliu, who said he has 34 years experience in rescue operation, insisted that there was nothing to suggest that the accident occurred as a result of explosion.

He said, “All the bodies recovered were whole and not dis-membered or burnt. Also there were no scattered bricks. The floors and pillars were also not shattered, rather the building had collapsed on top of each other. “The collapsed building did not depict any sign of explosion or implosion.”

6  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / NIS Arrests Citizens Of Ghana, Benin Republic & Togo Without Passports In Lagos on: 24-10-2014 10:47 PM

The Nigeria Immigration Service, Lagos State Command, on Thursday arrested 27 women and a 15-year-old boy in the Lagos Mainland area of the state.

The suspects were nationals of Benin Republic, Togo and Ghana.

They were said to be without a valid entry passport or visa, and would be repatriated as soon as the agency concluded all necessary investigation.

A few of the women were nursing mothers who had their babies strapped to their backs.

While the elderly ones showed remorse, the young ladies in the group chatted away as they avoided press interview and snapshots.

A woman in her 50s, who identified herself as Mrs Oluwaseun Joseph, from Cotonou, Benin Republic, was in tears as she pleaded for time to get her documents.

Joseph, who spoke in Yoruba with PUNCH Metro, said although she had stayed long in Nigeria, she did not know the importance of a valid passport until she was arrested on Thursday.

She said, “I have been in this country for a long time. I gave birth to my three children here. My husband who is also from Benin Republic, died some years ago.

“The work I do is to carry people’s load at Ebute Meta. I started the work when I was sick and needed money.

“That was what I was doing when they came to arrest me. If I had known about the document, I would have got it long ago. What will I do now? My kids are still in school.”

Fifteen-year-old Ishay Befaye said he had been in Lagos for only one month.

He said, “I am 15 years old. I came to Lagos on my own. My father is dead while my mother is in Benin Republic. I finished learning bricklaying in Benin and I came to Nigeria to find work. I planned to raise enough money and then regularise my papers. I make a lot of money from the work.

“I have a bank account in Lagos where I keep the money. I am just begging them to give me some time to get home and tell my friends that I want to go to the village to get my papers.”

But the state’s Comptroller, Justina Ahamdu, told our correspondent the command would not give the illegal immigrants a second chance.

Ahmadu said the agency had had a meeting with heads of ECOWAS members in the state, to warn against the danger of living in the country without valid documents.

She said, “I had a meeting with the heads of ECOWAS in the state in August when I resumed office, and I told them to warn their people staying in the country illegally, that if we picked them, we would not listen to them. And it was during the meeting I learnt that they also usually had periodic meetings with their fellow countrymen.

“Normally, when we go for raids like this, we profile and screen them before repatriating them. While repatriating them, we tell them that to be legal residents, they need to get valid documents and pass through authorised routes, before they can be allowed to stay. This is a continuous process.”

She warned that Nigerians, who keep illegal immigrants for cheap labour or obstruct officials of the agency from making arrests, may also be made to face the wrath of the law.

16  Forum / The Buzz Central / "President Jonathan doesn't Give Me Money" - Ibinabo Fiberisima on: 24-10-2014 10:12 PM

Ibinabo Fiberisima who just got re-elected as President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria for a second term, has addressed some issues regarding her tenure and what she still plans to do.She told Punch

“President Goodluck Jonathan has done a lot for Nollywood. He has helped us tremendously. Maybe some people are thinking that he is giving me money. But he is not doing that. They forget that there is a process you must pass through to get money from government as a Nollywood professional, not necessarily as an actor. Movie producers, directors, editors, scriptwriters, even costumiers have all been able to get access to funds to train themselves. People should learn and understand what is going on in the film industry before attacking other people.”
On some of her achievements
“Now that we have a health plan for Nollywood actors and actresses, you don’t see many of us begging any more. So we don’t have actors asking us to raise money for them again. We are telling all actors now that if they are not valid members of the guild and something bad happens to them, they are on their own. No state governor or government will come to their aid, if they are not registered members of AGN.”
On reports that AGN is split into different factions
“I think the problem is that everybody expects you to please them all the time. But you can’t satisfy everybody a hundred per cent. You can only do your best, which is what I am doing. Although everybody has the right to speak their minds, if these people who have been criticising my administration know what the AGN is all about – I am sure they don’t even know where the office of the guild is located – they won’t be going to the press to run us down"
