3501  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Enugu health workers begin indefinite strike on: 15-11-2014 06:00PM
The Chairman, Medical and Health Workers Union, Enugu State Chapter, Mr Maurice Eze, said on Saturday that health workers in state hospitals had begun an indefinite strike to protest the non-implementation of the 2009 Salary Structure.

Eze told the News Agency of Nigeria in Enugu that the approved 2009 salary structure for health workers and professionals had not been fully implemented by the state government.

He said the state government had implemented the doctors’ Salary Structure, but that it had yet to implement that of the health workers.

Eze said, “All the states in Nigeria have implemented the structure, except Enugu.

“We have written and appealed to the state government to pay us but to no avail.

“Even when they took us to court, the court ordered them to pay us because it is our entitlement but the government refused to carry out the order.

“Our two months’ salaries for April and May 2009 were seized because we went on strike to press for our demand and up till this moment, we are yet to be paid the seized salaries.

“We will not call off the strike until the state government meets our demands, “ he added.

3504  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / SAD: Kidnappers Storm Makurdi, Kidnap 7 Babies on: 15-11-2014 04:53PM

Sources gathered that the abductors had invaded several parts of the capital city of Makurdi and carries out their nefarious activities, even during day time.

It was gathered that a two-year-old baby strapped on the back of her mother, Ifeoma, was lost to unknown kidnappers, who snatched the baby from her back into a waiting moving vehicle.

It was further gathered that the incident which happened in the full glare of passers by and residents of Wadata sharp bend in Makurdi, could not be saved, as the vehicle sped off.

Another incidence was the sad story for one Emmanuel Ojo, a year old baby, who was said to have been abducted from his mother near Hope Clinic, around Benue Crescent in Makurdi .

The mother, Mary Ojo said, up to the time of reporting the matter to the police, Emmanuel was yet to be found. She appealed to those who might have her baby in her custody to release him.

3505  Forum / Politics / Inec Is Not An Independent Body - Atiku on: 15-11-2014 03:01PM
Nigeria’s former vice president, Atiku Abubakar has advocated the setting up of an independent body to oversee the recruitment and appointment of staff and officials of the country’s Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, as a means of strengthening the commission and making it truly independent.

Atiku, an aspirant for the position of president on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, was a guest of the Lagos State House of Assembly on Friday evening ostensibly to solicit the support of the lawmakers towards becoming the party’s candidate when APC holds its primaries in December.

Atiku, who scored INEC low in the distribution of the Permanent Voters Cards that held recently across some states of the federation, said the failure of the commission shows that it is not as independent as Nigerians would want it to be.

“Obviously I will not rate INEC positively because I have always believed the INEC is not an independent body.

“Everybody in INEC, from top to bottom, is appointed by the ruling party. So how can it be independent? I think for us to have an independent INEC, we must also have an independent body to appoint officials.
“Today, INEC cannot be independent and my brother, Asiwaju (Bola Tinubu) has described it as having merged with the PDP. So I don’t believe the PVC exercise is being conducted efficiently and in an independent manner because there are so many lapses that have trailed the issuance of the PVC,” he told journalists late Friday after a closed-door meeting with the lawmakers, a meeting which Speaker Adeyemi Ikuforiji described as a discussion between a father and his children.

Concerning the Boko Haram insurgency, Atiku said the government had consistently failed in the five years that the sect had held the country hostage.

He commended the hunters and vigilantes who took up the challenge against the sect and won two of the seized local governments.

According to him, the sect is not an invisible group, “unfortunately, the Armed Forces has failed to curtail it. So we have to defend ourselves.”

While welcoming other Nigerians who are interested in the seat of the President in the 2015 election under his party, Atiku also praised the APC for acting responsibly concerning the issue of a consensus candidate for the party.

He noted that a consensus candidate cannot be forced on other aspirants except with their agreement adding that this was why the APC asked that aspirants explore the option of consensus themselves and that if they did not find it workable, then they would be subjected to primaries.

Atiku said if he becomes president in 2015, he would ensure that the change Nigerians would see would be one that is physical and which they could feel rather than the propaganda that plays out on television adverts, radio and newspapers that calls President Goodluck Jonathan the best President.

3510  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / No Nigerian child should be born with HIV – Jonathan on: 14-11-2014 07:43AM
President Goodluck Jonathan has assured that by 2016 no Nigerian child would be born positive with HIV/AIDS.

The president was reacting to the recent protest staged by the Network of People Living With HIV/AIDS, where the victims accused the FG of abandoning them.

He also noted that the Federal Government had “begun the release of funds for the implementation of the President’s Comprehensive Response Plan for HIV/AIDS.”

Jonathan said his administration was aware that international partners had withdrawn their funding support for some aspects of HIV/AIDS services in the country.

Jonathan, who was represented by Vice President Namadi Sambo, expressed these feeling on Thursday in Abuja during the inauguration of the national operational plan for the Elimination of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV/AIDS 2015-2016.

Jonathan said, “No Nigerian child should be born with HIV. Together we shall end the AIDS epidemic among children. I, therefore, launch and present to you the eMTCT 2015-2016. The 2010 National Sentinel Survey for pregnant women attending antenatal care in Nigeria recorded a HIV prevalence of 4.1 per cent, while the population survey carried out in 2012 observed an HIV prevalence of 3.4 per cent. Nigeria records an estimated 6 million births annually and out of this number, a huge percentage of deliveries are outside health facility settings”.

The President also stated the efforts being put in place by his administration since 2011 to achieve 2016 eMTCT target.
He said, “In addition to these, the Federal Government through the Subsidy Re-investment Program and other programs has initiated Health Systems Strengthening projects that are critical to achieving the elimination of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV in various communities”.

At the event, the Director-General of National Agency for the Control of AIDS, Prof. John Idoko said, “Nigeria has made slow progress in the a prevention of Mother To Child Transmission of HIV/AIDS with 30 per cent coverage by 2013 due to a number of structural challenges including inadequate services at Primary Health Care level, poor attendance of pregnant women at antenatal services, and many women preferring to go to traditional birth attendants, Churches and Mosques to access antenatal and delivery services”.
3511  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Okada Rider Rapes 14-year-old Tuberculosis Patient In Lagos on: 14-11-2014 05:25AM

A 35-year-old man, Andrew Ekanem, has been arrested by the police for allegedly molesting his neighbour’s daughter in the Bariga area of Lagos State.

And according to PUNCH Metro, the 14-year-old victim was still undergoing a six-month treatment for tuberculosis when she was attacked by the suspect on Monday morning. She was the first of her parents' children.

The mother of the victim, Mrs. Adenike Aderinkomi, a trader, told PUNCH at their house on Akilo Street that her daughter went to ease herself in the early hours of the morning when she was cornered
by the Cross River State indigene. She claimed the suspect penetrated her daughter through the anus and honeypot. She said:

“It was around 2am on Monday when my daughter woke up and said she wanted to go and ease herself. I was having my quiet time and didn’t know when I slept off. I woke up about 15 minutes later and didn’t see her in the room.

I woke her father up and he said he didn’t know her whereabouts. We both became anxious and went outside to search for her. Another neighbour also joined us in the search.”

She said she was shouting her daughter’s name in the backyard, but did not get any response. Aderinkomi said about 10 minutes later, her husband saw their daughter coming out of Ekanem’s room. People overwhelmed her with a barrage of questions, but the Primary six pupil insisted she went to ease herself.

Her mother said she pulled her away from the growing crowd of neighbours and pressed her to talk.

“My daughter became afraid. She then told me that while she was on her way to ease herself, Ekanem grabbed her and took her inside his room to sleep with her. She said while I was shouting her name, he covered her mouth.

People seized him and wanted to beat him up. But I had to quickly report the matter to the police very early in the morning so people would not take the law into their hands,” she said.

Aderinkomi said she was surprised because when her daughter fell critically ill in February, last year, Ekanem assisted her family in taking her to Calabar, the Cross River State capital, for traditional treatment.

PUNCH Metro learnt that after the alleged rape, the victim was taken to the Gbagada General Hospital for testing and treatment. A medical report, which they sighted, revealed that the victim sustained bruises in her private parts.

The paper, signed by one Dr. Ojekunle of the hospital, stated:

“The child was caught with a neighbour around 2am today. She confessed that the neighbour called her on her way to ease herself and forced her and had sex with her. She sustained bruises in her anus and honeypot (as a result of) sexual assault.”

The victim had been taken to an undisclosed orthodox church for “prayers and deliverance”.

A carpenter, Tunde Hassan, who lives in the house where the incident happened, expressed surprise, saying nobody imagined Ekanem could do such a thing. Hassan said:

“Up till now, I cannot comprehend what happened. The man was a gentle man and he never fought or made trouble with anybody. But at the same time, people should learn to forgive when things like this happen, because you never can tell. Somebody that was bad to you today can be good to you tomorrow.”

It was learnt that the suspect was arrested by policemen from the Bariga Police Division. A police source told PUNCH that investigation revealed the suspect was fond of the act and usually induced his victims with money. He said:

“That was not his first time of doing such a thing. This particular girl, he had slept with her about three times. He was always giving her money ranging from N200 to N500. But this time, he was caught red-handed and that was why the girl’s parents are insisting on taking him to court. When he was queried, he didn’t give any reason for his behaviour. He’s just fond of sleeping with little girls.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Command, Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the incident, adding that the suspect had been taken to court.
3512  Forum / Politics / 2015 Ambition: Dimeji Bankole throws money at commuters, Okada riders on: 13-11-2014 10:37PM

What could be described as a popularity test played itself out Thursday evening at Kuto roundabout, Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun state when former Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Dimeji Bankole was sighted throwing money out from his vehicle to Okada riders and some commuters standing at the park.

Our correspondent who arrived the scene of the action few minutes after the former number four citizens had left saw some of the Okada riders and commuters discussing the matter.

An eyewitness account reported that Bankole, whose posters for the position of governor on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP have flooded most towns in the state was coming from Oke Mosan area in a convoy that was driving towards the GTB-Oke Ilewo road. His convoy was however stuck in a light gridlock around Kuto roundabout where he seized the opportunity to feel the pulse of the people.

“We were standing by the park around Kuto roundabout waiting for cab, then we saw a convoy coming from NNPC and heading towards our direction. It was the slight gridlock that occurred around that area that made us know that it was the former Speaker. We heard the blaring of siren but never thought he was the one because since he returned from Abuja, about three and half years ago, he has been going around quietly until lately.

“He was in a black Jeep, wearing a traditional attire of white guinea with white cap to match. When his car got to where Okada riders were, he wound down his glasses and when some of the boys sighted him, they started praising him and urging him to give them money. Some of the Okada riders ran in front of his convoy and instead of giving those boys their own share from the national cake, he decided to cause chaos around the place by throwing the money out. This immediately sparked a survival of the fittest contest, as people began scrambling for it.

Another eyewitness said: “He is throwing money all around because of the elections. Was he not the one that was once winding up all his vehicles? Padlocking all his gates with soldiers and policemen guarding it? Now that he needs the people again, he is deceiving them with N100 notes. Has he forgotten that Ogun is not Ekiti, where they believe in stomach structure,” the eyewitness said.

Most of the Okada riders who spoke with our correspondent revealed that they are collecting what rightly belongs to them but was in his custody, “Can you imagine the embarrassment? Some of our boys at the park who know him just saw him when he was trapped in the go-slow they went to him to salute him, maybe he was going to drop something for them.”

A woman, who was caught in the web of the action expressed disappointment at the former Speaker’s action, noting that, he did that deliberately to gauge how much the people like him.

According to the woman, who preferred to be identified as Mama Tubosun, she said, “I nearly collapsed following what just happened now. We were here waiting for a cab, when suddenly, I saw these Okada boys running and shouting, I thought something is happening. While we were trying to run inside the Metro bus park for safety, somebody just said, he has thrown it out. I nearly collapsed because I thought it was bomb they were referring to until I saw the boys pouncing on themselves scrambling for money.

Dimeji Bankole alongside other nine aspirants are jostling for the governorship ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Ogun state and political observers are of the opinion that if he is given the ticket, the party may pull a surprise in the governorship election in February 2015.

Other PDP governorship aspirants are: Abayomi Majekodunmi, Jelili Kayode Amusan, Isiaq Abiodun Akinlade, Gboyega
Nasir Isiaka, Engr. Anthony Ojesina, Prince Yanju Lipede, Omooba Segun Adewale, Rafiu Ogunleye and Remilekun Bakare, who defected from APC, Osoba camp to PDP recently.

3515  Forum / The Buzz Central / The World’s Tallest and Shortest Men Meet [Photos] on: 13-11-2014 08:39PM

The world's tallest man, Turkey's Sultan Kosen, who stands 2.51 metres (eight feet, nine inches) tall, today came face to face -- well, face to shin -- with the world's shortest man Chandra Bahadur Dangi from Nepal, who measures just 55 centimetres (21 and a half inches).

The little and large act met as people across the globe tried to break all manner of weird and wacky world records, including banging heads, catching spears and throwing thongs.

Kosen, a 31-year-old farmer, stooped down to shake hands with 74-year-old Dangi opposite the Houses of Parliament in London. He told AFP that meeting Chandra was "amazing", although he admitted bending the long, long way down for photographs was difficult.

"I was very interested how tall he was going to be, about how far up my legs he would go, and of course once I saw him I realised how tiny he was. I do have problems with my knees so if I stand too long I do get tired. Even though he is short and I am tall, we have had similar struggles throughout our lives and when I look into Chandra's eyes I can see he is a good man."

As well as being the tallest man, Kosen's hands are the biggest in the world -- an impressive 28.5 centimetres (11.22 inches) from the wrist to the tip of his middle finger.

Meanwhile Dangi, a primordial dwarf who makes placemats and head straps for villagers carrying heavy loads, is the shortest adult ever certified by Guinness World Records. He told AFP:

"I was very pleased to see the tallest man in the world, I was curious to meet my extreme opposite. I'm so pleased to be a Guinness record holder. Thanks to this I have visited many countries and met many people. I really love it."

The two men met today to celebrate the 10th annual Guinness World Records Day
