2  Forum / The Buzz Central / UNCOVERED: Young Ghanian Girls undergoing Dipo Virginity Initiation. on: 17-11-2014 01:05 PM
Dipo – Puberty Rites among the Krobos of Eastern Region, Ghana.

This is the first time it was caught on camera because their tradition has always forbidden it but due to modernization, the initiation processes of this unique tradition had to be uncovered.

Puberty Rites called Dipo among the Krobos is a very prominent event which has been carried out for years despite the influences of education, modernization and missionization. The practice is held very strongly by the Krobos and it is ensured that every female in the tribe undergoes the rites. The rites are held every year between the months of April and May. Several girls partake in this event which lasts for a period of four days during which they spend most of their time in the Dipo house where the rites take place.

During this period, the girls are dressed in a special way to show that they are initiates. They have food restrictions and are only allowed to drink water from a well. They are taught the Klama dance, undergo a ritual bath and the crux of the rite is when the girls are made to sit on a stone which is believed determines virginity. Any girl who is found not to be a virgin at the time of the rites used to be ostracized in the past and was treated as an outcast. Nowadays, a set of purification rituals are performed for such a girl. On the last day of the rites, the girls are dressed up in colourful Kente cloth (a traditional cloth in Ghana) and adorned with a lot of beads on their neck, arms and waist. A durbar is held during which the girls perform the Klama dance amidst singing and in the presence of onlookers.

In the past, when there was no formal education, the rites served as a form of vocational training period for initiates where they were taught housekeeping and child rearing skills. The girls were therefore initiated into womanhood after which, they were ready to be married.

The rites have undergone a number of changes over the years. It was previously held for girls who had reached the age of puberty and were of marriageable age but now girls as young as two and four years of age are made to go through the rites. The period for the rites has also lessened. In the past, the girls used to be camped in the Dipo house for a period of a year, then it reduced to some months and then a few weeks and today, a period of four days. Formal education is mostly attributed to this change. Marks used to be made on the back of the hands of the participants. These days, it has been replaced with photography. There have been a lot of discussions about the exposure of the body as the girls are made to wear the very minimum clothing and have their Bosom s exposed during the rites. There have been calls for the abolishment of the rites as it is seen as a fetish practice which also exposes girl’s nudity to the public. However, the Krobos still hold strongly to this cultural practice which is indigenous to them and is seen as an emblem of the tribe.

The rites attract an increasing number of tourists from within and outside Ghana who travel to the Krobo towns every year to witness the event. The bead industry also thrives during the season of the rites as the girls are made to wear a lot of beads in the last days of the rites. The rites were significant in preventing teenage pregnancy segxwal promiscuity until girls were of age and ready to be married. However, with the increasing number of younger participants way below puberty age, it is feared that the Dipo is gradually loosing its significance.

The study therefore looks into a cultural practice that has withstood the test of time even though it is continually undergoing changes. The rites have been modified over the years and are still undergoing changes. Factors that have influenced these changes include education, Christianity, and modernization among others. The Krobos have managed to preserve their culture despite these influences which makes it a subject of interest as puberty rites among other tribes in Ghana is virtually non-existent.

3  Forum / The Buzz Central / FG introduces austerity measures as drop in oil market price affects the economy on: 17-11-2014 08:36 AM

Following the continued drop in oil price in international market, the Federal government yesterday announced the introduction of some austerity measures such as tax introduction on luxury goods such as champagne, jets, amongst other, to be implemented to reduce the effect of the continued oil price decline on the Nigerian economy as Nigeria is largely an oil dependent economy.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja yesterday November 16th, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, said as part of measures to cushion the hardship that is to come due to the continued drop of oil price in the international market, government would henceforth collect “tax on luxurious goods,” and that this was part of measures aimed at increasing revenue from non-oil sectors.

"We all know the definition of luxury goods, we are still compiling the lists and one of the things we can tax is champagne, alcoholic beverages, jets, luxury cars- we will look at the engine capacity, and yachts. We are putting the list together but we intend to do a surcharge going forward on these items. The principle is that those who are better off in the society and I hope they won’t mind will be willing to share a bit more in remitting a little bit more to the treasury than what they normally do on these things.” she said

She revealed that another austerity measure being put in place by the government is the reduction of international travel within the public service

“We are not talking about (cutting) salaries and benefits. We are talking of trainings and travels and these will be only for critical and essential items which will be pre-approved by the Head of Service and the Director-General of the Budget Office and then if someone invites you for overseas course, you can go provided they pay for your training and your stay and you have to furnish evidence that they are paying before you will be allowed. The purpose of this is to tell you what we are doing and this team is calm and will be effective and we are working with the monetary policy authorities and together we will manage the economy in a transparent manner so that people need not have any fear.” she said

The Minister said that after studying the trend in the drop of oil price in the international market, the economic team approved a $5 per barrel reduction in the 2015 budget benchmark price for oil from $78 to $73 per barrel.

“As part of the response, the Medium Term Expenditure Framework and the Budget 2015 proposal to the National Assembly have been revised. Government is now proposing a benchmark of $73 dollars per barrel to the National Assembly compared to the earlier proposed benchmark of $78. Given the nature of the oil market, we needed to see the extent and trend of the oil price in order to take the right measures. Panic is not a strategy. It’s important that our strategies are based on facts and a clear understanding of both the strengths of the economy and the challenges posed by the drop in oil prices which is currently at $79 for our premium Bonny Light Crude. The drop in oil prices is a serious challenge which we must confront as a country. We must be prepared to make sacrifices where necessary".

On the advise from some scholars to print more Naira notes so as to reduce the effect of the oil price drop on Nigerians, the Minister said such an action if implemented would be disastrous to the nation as it would increase the inflation rate of the economy

"Printing money without adequate revenue support will lead to serious consequences for the country. It will spur inflation as the experiences of Germany in the early part of the last century and more recently, Argentina and Zimbabwe demonstrate. This prescription will victimise the poor and the middle class that it is supposedly protecting.” she said

She said one of the best ways of managing the situation was to create more jobs. She announced that President Jonathan would today November 17th launch the 4th edition of the You Win youth empowerment programme.

“To show how serious government is about job creation, President Jonathan will tomorrow, (Monday) November 17 launch the 4th edition of YouWin to support another 1,500 entrepreneurs along with a private equity fund for entrepreneurs. That is an expression of government’s commitment and seriousness to job creation.”

Dr Okonjo-Iweala said the reduction in price of the oil prices in the international market may continue but that government would do everything possible to make sure Nigeria is not adversely affected.
She said from the $4.1bn (N656bn) in the Excess Crude Account, the government would be withdrawing $2bn (N320bn) between now and the end of this year to take care of critical expenditure.

“We will work in such a way that we won’t deplete the ECA because we have to leave something for next year but we might go to tap about a half of it ($2bn) or slightly less than half to be able to meet expenditures that are crystalizing at the moment that we need to make.” she said

She also stated that infrastructural expenditure would still continue as the economy can only improve when infrastructural development is in place.
4  Forum / The Buzz Central / Obama calls beheading of american aide worker Peter Kassig ‘pure evil’ on: 17-11-2014 08:26 AM

American aid worker and former soldier Peter Kassig was beheaded by ISIS terrorists, the White House confirmed Sunday, hours after a video claiming to show the victim surfaced online.

ISIS held Kassig as a hostage and in previous communications had threatened his life.

The video shows the aftermath of a beheading in which the victim is not clearly recognizable.

President Barack Obama confirmed the 26-year-old’s beheading, saying Kassig “was taken from us in an act of pure evil by a terrorist group that the world rightly associates with inhumanity.”

Kassig, who converted to Islam in captivity, also went by the name Abdul-Rahman Kassig.

He first traveled to the Middle East as a U.S. soldier and returned as a medical worker, feeling compelled to help victims of war.
He did aid work in Syria, where he was captured. He was held hostage for over a year.

“We are heartbroken to learn that our son, Abdul-Rahman Peter Kassig, has lost his life as a result of his love for the Syrian people and his desire to ease their suffering,” Kassig’s parents, Ed and Paula, said in a statement.

The parents released a previously unpublished audio recording of their son, recorded by a journalist before Kassig was taken captive.

“You know we would have a chance here to make up for a lot wrong that we did in this part of the world if we stepped in, in the right way,” Peter Kassig says in the recording. “If we just as a country did what other people helped me to do in that hospital. How much did I impact the political situation inside Syria? None. How much did I impact the political situation back home? None. But what I did do is that over period of time in that hospital I was able to share a little bit of hope and comfort with some people.”

5  Forum / The Buzz Central / Wizkid Behavior: Justin Bieber Not Releasing Album Anytime Soon on: 17-11-2014 08:17 AM

Sorry beliebers, but Justin Bieber isn’t ready to make an album yet.
Reports had surfaced suggesting the Biebz would release an album before March of 2015, but there seems to be no truth to them.
According to HollywoodLife.com, Beiber is reluctant to go on tour now so, he isn’t recording an album yet.

“He is in no rush to make a full album because he doesn’t want to tour right now,” a source reveals to HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY. “A full album doesn’t make him any money. He will still continue to release singles and keep his music out there, but a full album is still a long time coming.”

When questioned about a report claiming that Justin told fans that he’s working on a new album to be released in March, our source was skeptical: “I’ll believe it when I see it.”

Justin’s last studio album, Believe, was released in 2012.
