“I am a firm believer in knowledge acquisition so I always tell young actors, who want to enter our industry to get an education first.

In fact, if you tell me you are interested in acting, I will ask you what you are doing presently. If you say you are currently in school, I will advise you to finish before you join the movie industry. Even if you are learning a trade, make sure you are certified before you join the movie industry. If you are seeking to gain admission into the university, ensure you complete your studies first before you come into the movie industry. If you fail to do so, once you become a famous actor, it will be difficult for you to go back to school. Education is very important in anything you do in life.”

185  Forum / Law and Crime / Police Arrest Ex-Boyfriend Of Murdered Rivers Varsity student, Miss Matilda Mark Itonyo on: 16-12-2019 02:04 PM

The Rivers State Police Command has arrested one suspect in connection with the gruesome murder of a 500-level Law student of the Rivers State University, Miss Matilda Mark Itonyo.

The suspect, whose name was withheld by the police, was only identified as a former boyfriend of the murdered student.

It was gathered that the police had in the early hours of Saturday tracked the suspect to his house in Port Harcourt before taking him away to the State Criminal Investigation Department.

The 24-year-old Matilda was stabbed several times in the neck and head by her assailant(s) at her private apartment outside the university campus.

The killers were said to have broken into her room in the early hours of Tuesday and allegedly raped her before snuffing life out of her.

The incident, according to sources, forced some of her course mates to shun classes when they got wind of the incident.

Confirming the arrest of the suspect, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Nnamdi Omoni, explained that he was apprehended for interrogation in connection with Matilda’s murder.

He stated, “We cannot say that we have arrested the killer of the student. He was only arrested for interrogation and at the end, if he is found culpable, he will be prosecuted. But if he is innocent, he will be allowed to go.

“Yes, the suspect is the former boyfriend of the late student. He was arrested on Saturday morning after being tracked to his residence.”

The father of the deceased, Mr Ebikene Itonyo, told Punch correspondent that he rushed to the state CID when he learnt that a suspect had been arrested.

Ebikene called on the police not to relent in their efforts to fish out the killers of his daughter and bring them to justice.

“I was at the state CID. I rushed to the place when I was told that one of the suspects had been arrested. We know that the suspect will deny, but I think the police must have seen some certain things that made them to arrest him,” Ebikene added.

186  Forum / The Buzz Central / It Is Improper For Man Who Lost Election To Call For Revolution – Muslim Group Tells Sowore on: 16-12-2019 01:47 PM

The Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, has reacted to the re-arrest of Omoyele Sowore, convener of the RevolutionNow Movement by operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS, at an Abuja Federal High Court.

The group says it was “improper” for a man who lost an election to lead a revolution against the winner of that same election just a few months later.

Sowore had contested for the 2019 presidential election on the platform of the African Action Alliance, AAC, but President Muhammadu Buhari had emerged the winner of the poll.

However, MURIC appealed for calm over the matter, stressing that dialogue should be used in resolving the impasse.

A statement by MURIC’s Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola reads:

Quote
“Sowore is an active member of civil society. Perhaps this is why human rights groups are in a hurry to castigate the DSS and call President Buhari names. But has civil society pursed to ponder on Sowore’s tactical blunder? We all must admit that it was improper for a man who lost an election to lead #Revolutionnow against the winner of that same election just a few months later. It amounts to seeking to gain by the bends what he could not get at the straight.

“In our efforts to engage in dialogue over the Sowore furore, we were confronted with a statement purportedly made by the activist politician. He was alleged to have said on 25th July 2019, ‘I’m not talking of protest. I’m embarking on revolution. 85% of Nigerians are in support. Don’t tell me about legal implications or what a Judge will say. I don’t care. We must bundle Buhari out of that place…the DSS shall cease to exist!’

“If it is true that he said the above, those of us in civil society should have the courage to tell him that he went too far. We all know what has been happening across the globe. Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Spain, Venezuela, etc are examples. No nation takes a threat to security lightly.

“As a human rights group, MURIC wants Sowore freed. We are for constitutionalism and rule of law. But national security must not be jettisoned. Those of us who are leaders of civil society must realise that we have a duty to lead responsibly. Radicalism must not shut the door against rationalism. We believe that Aluta must stop where any matter affecting national security starts.
MURIC has, therefore, advised members of the civil society to call off its planned protest particularly in view of the fact that government has ordered a probe into the circumstances surrounding the re-arrest of Sowore and Bakare.

194  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Gov. Sanwo Olu Hosts Ministers Uche Ogah & Olamilekan Adegbite, Laments Neglect Of Sector on: 13-12-2019 02:29 PM

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called on leaders in the public and private sectors to ensure development of the mining industry.

The Governor revealed that there will be a collaboration between the Federal and State Governments to ensure a sustainable development in the mining sector.

The Governor disclosed this on Thursday at the Lagos House, Marina during a courtesy visit paid by the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Architect Olamilekan Adegbite and the Minister of State for Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Uchechukwu Ogah.

The Governor said that this collaboration is targeted at ensuring growth and diversification of the nation’s economy, stating that the outcome will be victory for the people.

According to him: “As a nation, we need to continue to see how development can happen in the mining sector, and it has to be an inclusive one.

Quote
“As much as possible, we need to push a lot of transparency there. It also has to be a development that truly reflects our federating state and the minister has assured me that it is an area in which they want to collaborate.

“And we as a State must also trust and see that we are from the same side, just like everyone sees the same sides of a coin so for us at the end of the day is development for our people, the nation, growth and diversification of our economy and it’s really an opportunity to take our state and our nation to a greater height.”

Sanwo-olu commended the team and assured them that his administration will ensure that there is full cooperation with the Federal Government for the benefit of the general public.

Speaking earlier, Adegbite explained that the Federal Government is using the medium to increase job opportunities in the country.

He lamented the neglect of the sector and stated that attention is gradually shifting to the mining sector.

He added that the team would visit all the States across Nigeria to enlighten them of the new development, with Lagos being the first State to be visited.

He said:
Quote
“We are here essentially in furtherance of the issues that arose from the NEC meeting that was held the last week. The potentials are in the mining industry to diversify the economy of Nigeria and create more employment.”

Adegbite stated that a committee has been set up to iron out the cases of overlapping between the FG and the States. He said that the committee will be headed by the Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi.

196  Forum / Law and Crime / Bauchi Court Sentences Man, Umaru Jauro To Death By Hanging For Killing Father Inside A Mosque on: 13-12-2019 01:26 PM

A Bauchi State High Court has sentenced a middle-aged man, Umaru Jauro-Ori, to death by hanging for killing his father inside a mosque in the Mai’aduwa Village, Misau Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

Justice Aliyu Usman found Umaru guilty of culpable homicide after reviewing the testimonies of witnesses and listening to the final addresses of both the prosecution and the defence counsel.

In his judgment, Usman said, “The death of the victim was as result of the act of the accused and the prosecution counsel has proved their case beyond reasonable doubt; the accused is hereby found guilty of culpable of homicide, an offence that is punishable by death under Section 221 of the Penal Code. I, hereby sentence him to die by hanging.”

Earlier while reviewing the case, Justice Usman held that the State Chief Counsel, Hussein Magaji, told the court that the accused went into a mosque in Mai’aduwa and struck his father in his head and back with a cutlass.

Usman said as a result of the convict’s action, the deceased sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the Misau General Hospital, where he died the following day from the injuries he sustained from the attack.

The judge also noted that Umaru denied the charges and pleaded not guilty during trial, but the prosecution counsel brought 10 witnesses who, in their separate statements as recorded by the police during investigation, testified that the convict killed his father.

He also noted that a brother to the deceased, Umar Jatau, 70, and the convict’s brother, Ibrahim Jauro-Ori, 26, stated that Umaru had a problem with his father and other family members.

The judge also said the witnesses told the court that the deceased shared with the convict and his brother their inheritance, after which Umaru left the village for over 10 months with nobody knowing his whereabouts, until the day he came into the mosque while they were praying and stabbed his father.

The witnesses told the court that the youth in the area pursued the convict, apprehended him and took him to the police station.

They said that the deceased was rushed to the hospital but died while receiving treatment and his body was released to them for burial according to Islamic rights.

Umaru, in his statement to the police, said he was married to one wife and was blessed with three children, adding that he killed his father because he separated him and his wife after he travelled and stayed for a long time.

He stated, “When I returned, I took a machete and entered the mosque, where my father was praying, and stabbed him in his head and back, and he fell down. I ran away and the youth pursued me, apprehended me and beat me mercilessly and injured my right fingers.

“They took our father to hospital and he died while receiving treatment. I haven’t killed a human being before, I am not an armed robber, but this is the first time I killed a human being.”

198  Forum / The Buzz Central / Young Afrobeats Star, Rema The “Bad Commando” Covers FADER’s NOW Issue on: 13-12-2019 12:54 PM

Divine Ikubor, known professionally as Rema the “Bad Commando” crooner is on the cover of FADER’s NOW Issue!

The 19-Year Old afrobeats star proves to FADER that he is “bridging cultural gaps in a way that everyone else is still catching up with.”

Earlier this year, Rema released his self-titled debut EP, which included one of 2019’s biggest Nigerian hits: “Dumebi,” a contagious afrobeats number that’s proved an international success.

Read excerpts from the magazine:

Quote
None of Rema’s music feels ostensibly spiritual. The majority of his songs center around his pursuit of beautiful girls who he can’t resist. Beyond his two most well-known tracks — “Dumebi” and this year’s “Iron Man” — his eponymous debut EP also featured the silky love story “Corny,” and poppy-trap tracks like “Why,” dealing with teenage emotions about a girl who isn’t paying him sufficient attention.

On the recent single “Lady,” he coos over an up tempo beat by Altims — an accomplished Nigerian producer and DJ who’s worked with national stars Tiwa Savage, D’Prince, and Korede Bello — that sounds like it could suit any of the rising stars in reggaeton. If there’s something spiritual to be gained from this music, it’s how serene Rema manages to sound regardless of the production he’s engaging with.

“He has melodies he just brings out from nowhere,” exclaims Ozedikus, an in-house producer for Nigerian pop powerhouse Mavin Records who produced both “Dumebi” and “Iron Man.” He started sending beats to Rema after they met last year, but their biggest song together was a happy accident: Ozedikus originally crafted the beat for “Dumebi” for another artist who, while wrapping up a late night session, handed the beat to Rema when they were ready to call it a night. “Rema knows how to bring the best out of every beat. Sometimes, he’ll ask me to leave it halfway done and work on it unfinished. He’s every producer’s dream. He just makes work easy.”
