40485  Forum / Law and Crime / S.A. To Taraba Gov. And One Other Sentenced To 11yrs Jail Term For Employment Scam on: 16-04-2016 02:07 PM

A Jalingo chief magistrates’ court on Friday sentenced Dominic Bukuni, 59, a Special Adviser to Governor Darius Ishaku of Taraba State to two years imprisonment for criminal conspiracy, cheating and forgery.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reportedd that Bebeto Haruna, 32, who was arraigned along with Bukuni, was also sentenced to nine years in jail.

The chief magistrate, Mr Yusuf Babasoro, in a three-hour judgement, said that the prosecution had proved its case beyond any reasonable doubt that the two accused were guilty of the offences as charged.

Babasoro said that Haruna was guilty as charged on the first and second counts for impersonation and cheating which were contrary to sections 132 and 322 of the Penal Code.

He said that the offences attracted a fine of N5, 000 and N10, 000 or jail terms of six months and one year respectively.

The magistrate also convicted Haruna on a three-count charge of fraud to the tune of N3.5million and sentenced him to seven years imprisonment without an option of fine.

According to Babasoro, Haruna defrauded 28 unsuspecting victims of the amount on the pretext that he would assist them to secure employment at the Taraba State University, Jalingo.

The magistrate, delivering his judgement on Bukuni, found him guilty of criminal conspiracy, impersonation and cheating.

He sentenced the convict to two years imprisonment with an option of a fine of N20,000.
Babasoro said that the offences contravened Section 597 of the Penal Code.

Earlier, the prosecutor, ASP Mohammed Ibrahim, in his First Information Report (FIR) filed before the court on March 20, 2013, said that Haruna and Bukuni committed the offences sometime between June and December 2013.

Ibrahim said that the two men criminally conspired between themselves and impersonated Senator Emmanuel Bwacha and the vice chancellor of the Taraba State University, Professor Sani Yahaya, respectively.

40487  Forum / Law and Crime / Woman Brutalizes Her 8yrs Old Housemaid For Taking Food Without Permission (Photos) on: 16-04-2016 08:31 AM

A 40-year-old trader, Mrs. Deborah Gabriel, who brutalised her housemaid, eight-year-old Glory Ugbon, and then put pepper in the girl’s eyes and private part when the girl decided to steal a plate of rice because she was hungry. has been arrested.

According to Punch, five months after Glory started living with the trader as her housemaid, the girl has been allegedly brutalised many times and there are so many marks all over her body.

Glory, who had been in the servitude of Deborah in Surulere, Lagos since November 2015, said her elder sister simply took her to the woman at the time during her visit to Akwa Ibom State and said
she would follow her to Lagos to be her housemaid.
“Madam said she would put me in school and my sister told me that she would treat me well. The woman is not related to us. I work at home all the time but sometimes when she is not happy with me, she beats me till I cannot walk” Glory said.
But on Sunday, April 10, the co-tenants of Deborah decided to take action to prevent the woman from killing the girl when they noticed that she had taken the torture of the girl a notch higher.

The neighbours alerted child rights activists, who promptly notified the police when the little girl would not stop screaming.

Glory, who was later brought to the Aguda Police Division, Surulere, Lagos along with Deborah, said on that particular day, she was simply eating at the backyard of their house, when her madam accused her of stealing food.

Because of that, Deborah brutalised the girl first.
“When she was tired of beating me, she forced my legs apart and rubbed some pepper that she had just ground in my eyes and my bum bum (private part),” she said.
When the pain became unbearable, neighbours raised the alarm when they learnt what the woman did to the girl.

Glory, who was sobbing as she was brought to the police station along with her madam, explained that she was very hungry when Deborah caught her eating and became furious.

Glory’s case is one of many similar incidents in which housemaids have been brutalised by their bosses.

It is unclear under what circumstances Glory was handed over to Deborah. She said she was in Primary 3 before she left her parents in their village.

The girl told Punch that her mother and father were in the village in Akwa Ibom State.
“Since November that she brought me to Lagos,  she has not talked about any school for me,” Glory said.
On Monday after their correspondent spoke with the sobbing girl, she had to be taken to Mirabel segxwal Assault Referral Centre in Ikeja, Lagos for treatment because she would not stop complaining about the pepper, some of which had become lodged inside her.

They spoke with Deborah, the woman was apologetic as she explained that “something just came over me” when she tortured the girl.
“Please, help me. I am so sorry for what I did. I know it is wrong but I just could not control my anger. I promise to take care of her and give her adequate treatment now. I am so sorry for what I did.”
When the correspondent spoke with the woman’s husband, Victor, he said that he slept too deeply that day that he did not hear as his wife brutalised the girl and put pepper in her private part.

He said:
“My wife flogged the girl because she caught her eating in the backyard. I told the girl too that she should not have eaten at the back of the house. I was the one who even prepared the stew.
“I went to sleep later and when I woke up the following morning, I saw all the wounds on the girl’s body. That was when I also knew that she had put pepper in the girl’s private part.
“I did not know that she beat her so badly. I guess I slept too deeply and did not hear the girl’s screaming because of the drug I took that day. I would have intervened.”
Asked how such an underage girl was brought into their home as a housemaid, Victor said that when his wife brought the girl from Akwa Ibom, during a visit to their hometown, he challenged her because the girl was very young.
“I told her the girl was too young, but she said the girl is hardworking and that she would cope. I really blame my wife for what happened but I assure you sir that we would treat her. We would take her to the hospital for treatment and return her to her parents,” he said.
Saturday PUNCH learnt that Deborah was charged with child abuse and assault against a minor at the Surulere Magistrate’s Court, Lagos on Tuesday.

She was remanded at the Kirikiri Prison, pending the perfection of her bail. Founder and Coordinator of the Jeshabel Touch-A-Heart Foundation, Mrs. Favour Benson, who took up the girl’s case, told Saturday PUNCH that at the moment, Glory is being given refuge in a state government home in Lagos but that effort would be made to contact her parents so that they could take custody of her.

She said:
“The girl’s case was particularly annoying because the woman did not express any remorse for the way she tortured the girl.
With the kind of scars on the girl’s body within the six months she had been with her, it is clear she had been torturing the girl as soon as she started living with her.
She said she tortured the girl out of frustration and she told us that the girl was always stealing food. We asked her if the girl was stealing anything else, she said no, that it was just food. If Glory was not constantly hungry, she would not steal food.”
40488  Forum / Law and Crime / WHAT! ICPC Seizes 61 Houses Belonging To One Female Public Servant. on: 16-04-2016 08:17 AM

The ICPC Chairman, Mr. Ekpo Nta has made a shocking revelation while giving details how the commission seized 61 houses from just one female civil servant.

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission says it has begun arresting civil servants who live beyond their means as it has seized 61 houses belonging to one female public servant.

The revelation was made by the Chairman of the ICPC, Mr. Ekpo Nta, said this while addressing participants of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies at the Abuja headquarters of the agency on Friday.

Speaking on the theme, ‘The role of the ICPC in the War Against Corruption: Mandate, Strategies and Challenges’, the ICPC boss said, “We are developing scorecard like Transparency International which rates countries as to the level of corruption of countries. We have developed one for ministries departments and agencies. Hopefully, we know those who will take the first prize.”

Nta added that once the 2016 Budget is passed, the ICPC would begin monitoring how monies are being spent.

He revealed that the commission had begun prosecuting public servants that live beyond their means.

“From one of the employees of one of the organisations, we seized about 61 or 62 houses in an estate. The matter is in court so I can’t say too much but I want to say that the officer was not a man. We do prosecution but also try to seize the assets acquired (through corrupt means) so that apart from prosecution, we can strip you of the assets within and outside the country,” he said.

Nta said the ICPC is also investigating university lecturers who demand sex from female students in return for good grades.

He said even though it was the role of the police to investigate cases of segxwal harassment and rape, it was also the role of the ICPC to investigate cases bordering on abuse of office.

Nta said, “We have special teams that investigate universities here. Quite a number of students that have spent more than the statutory period, like young girls who have spent eight years for a four-year programme because they refused to do what should not be done. We got involved and they have graduated and we are still looking at the possibility of prosecution.”
40489  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / If You Just Finished Your NYSC, Then Be Ready For These 6 Things on: 16-04-2016 08:09 AM

Now that they have hung the jungle boots and folded there khaki away, life has just begun as a Nigerian graduate. You know all the dreams and ideas, they had while in school and waiting to hit the ground running with after NYSC, well, the time has come to make it happen. Your destiny is in your hands now and you have o make the best of your time – And because life dosn’t always go through the pattern we dream of it, NAIJAPALS has put together 6 things most of these ex corp members will definitely go through…

1. Getting ready to trek:  We all know the jobs in Nigeria are fewer than the available number of graduates hence the struggle to grab the few available ones are too real for those people who have no ‘oga at he top’. This isn’t the endurance trek -NO! This is the one where you deck up in your best shirt, skirt/trousers and the traditional brown envelope, head out early to make that appointment for your first interview and subsequent ones or to submit our cv anywhere and everywhere just in case there is an opening.

2. Parents don’t care anymore: Now you are going to realise that your parents who provided for your every single need back in the university, will no longer do. they are either focusing on your siblings in school(if thwere are) or easing off the stress of child rearing. So, all they do now is pray and hope you get a job, so you too can come and take care of them.

3. Nigeria as a student is different from Nigeria as a graduate: Now you are going to realise that life is not a bed of roses. Things have changed and you are now your own boss. Life is going to step on your toes, there will be times when it looks like your dreams will never come true or that God doesn’t answer prayers anymore but you are goin to gave to keep moving.

4. Uncles don’t really care: Sadly, you are going to find that, that uncle who ave you a pat on the back and said ‘send me your cv when you graduate so I place you somewhere’, would now tell you that he has very little power to do anything for you. The sadder part, their child who also just passed out of NYSC the same time like you, wouldn’t have a problem geting  a job.

5. Bills won’t pay themselves: Now you are now an adult. Like your parents say ‘we won’t always be there for you, a time will come when you have to stand opn your own too feet.” Nowm that ime has come, and you are standing on your own two feet without a job in a sight and bills o pay but keep strong, there is God.

6. No more allowee: This is the moment where you realise that the constant N19k which you were paid as a corper and took for granted, will jo longer come your way. This won’t matter to you, if you get a job immediatel(which we hope you do) but would start to look like the whole world is against you, when you check your account balance and the little you saved up is about to finish.

And the only question on your mind is “We thouht Buhari was gping to give unemployed graduates 5k, where is it now???” LOL!!!!!!!!!
40490  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Esenam Nyador : Taxi Driver, A Single Mother With 2 Children Bags A Masters Degree -Photos on: 16-04-2016 07:53 AM

The term 'taxi driver' is often associated with men and is not considered a job for a woman. But for Ghanaian born Esenam Nyador, that story is for the gods.
The 38 year old mother of two and university graduate is best known by her clients as Miss Taxi. She is currently rounding up her Master's Degree in Family Resource Management at the College of Basic and Applied Sciences, University of Ghana. According to her,  after she completed her first degree, she tried her best to find a job but couldn't secure one. She told herself that she'd rather become a taxi driver than stress over the frustration of having to seek for a job as a university graduate. Speaking to journalists, she said:

"In 2013, I finished my first degree at the University of Ghana. Rather than do the typical thing and send out hundreds of applications in the hope for a job, I decided to start something by myself. I also had a strong entrepreneurial streak. That, paired with a bold personality, made me eager to try out starting something in a traditionally male-dominated industry. Many of my friends accuse me of being a social deviant [laughs]. I chose taxi driving because this is is a very non-traditional thing to do for a woman in Ghana, and I think of my decision as a gender statement. I didn't mind stepping on a few toes to change the status quo."

This is not the first time Trezzy Blog has profiled a female taxi driver. Recall last month, we published the strory of Asakpa Aghogho Susan. A lovely female Abuja graduate who studied Accountancy but was unable to secure a job after graduating. Rather than remain idle, Susan decided to turn her personal car into taxi to make ends meet.

If these women can beat the odds and thrive in the face of unemployment - what's your excuse?

40491  Forum / Law and Crime / How 17yrs Old Girl Narrowly Escaped Being Used For Money Rituals By Her 33yrs Old Lover on: 16-04-2016 07:42 AM

A 17-year old Senior Secondary School (SSS) 2 student, Ruth Alabi narrowly escaped been killed for money ritual when her boy friend lured her to the herbalist residence at Olodo area of Ibadan before she was rescued by vigilante men .Ruth Alabi who claimed that she was an SS2 student at an undisclosed school in Abuja said she came to spend the Easter holiday with her mother in Ibadan when the incident occurred.

Her boy friend, Chubuike Omigbo, 33 who used to sell building materials at the Iwo Road area of Ibadan was arrested and paraded alongside the herbalist, Oladimeji Babatunde Ajala, 37 by the state police Command on Friday.

The state Commissioner of Police (CP), Mr Leye Oyebade who briefed newsmen on the incident at the state Police headquarters, Eleyele, Ibadan told journalists that the suspects had planned to use the girl for money making ritual before the evil planned was thwarted by the police.

The CP noted that the suspects were arrested following a tip-off by a strategic partner when the duo were planning to use the girl for money ritual.

He said ” the victim’s boyfriend, Chibuike, had lured her to the herbalist’s residence at No5, Galilee street, Olodo area of the state for the purpose of the ritual.

“Luck, however ran out on them when their evil plan was uncovered through their conversation which was overheard by an eavesdropper. The suspects confessed to being fraudsters and that they had defrauded many innocent victims in the past,” the CP said.

The police also recovered a black Nissan Altima with registration No. APP 627 CA, which the police said was bought with the proceeds from illegal business.

Other items recovered from the suspects were some criminal charms, one statute in the image of Jesus, two other statutes and broken bottles spread on a mat.

Answering questions from newsmen, the victim, Ruth Alabi who was accompanied by her mother said she had been going out with her boyfriend in the past four months until the incident occurred.

According to her, they usually meet in front of Tantalizer before they proceed to hotel where they have fun.

“But the day this incident happened, Easter day, my boyfriend came with two of his friends and he asked me to enter a vehicle which they brought and they took me to a hotel where I was asked what will I drink. I told him that I will take malt drink, but he insisted I should take stout. So, I took a small bottle of stout. At a point, one of his friends said I should come with him into a hotel room and there he told me he wants to have sex with me. I was uncomfortable with that, wondering how could that be. So, I had to lie that I was in my menstrual cycle.

After, my boyfriend said I should accompany him to another place, but I told him its already dark, that my mother has been calling my phone and that I will like to return home. He continued to pester me, until he took me to the place , and when we got to a place, he was calling some of his friends and I was afraid because it was already 10pm. That was all I know.”

The victim was said to have slumped on their way to the residence of the herbalist and this attracted vigilante men who later called the police.

When the police came, Ruth Alabi was rushed to a nearby hospital in an unconscious state, before she was revived.
While in the hospital, the girl said medical examination revealed that the stout she drank was laced with drugs.

Speaking with journalists, the two suspects denied the plan to use the girl for ritual .
40492  Forum / The Buzz Central / Mike Adenuga's Petulant Son Sues Lover For Custody of Their 16 Month Old Daughter on: 16-04-2016 07:33 AM

An Igbosere Magistrate’s Court in Lagos has granted custody rights to Eniola, son of multi-billionaire businessman, Mike Adenuga, over his 16-month old daughter.

But his girlfriend with whom he had the child, Maggie Ogun, a pharmacist, has sought the court’s leave to appeal the order.

Chief Magistrate O. A. Ogunbowale dismissed Ogun’s objection that Adenuga cannot take adequate care of the child.

“Consequently, the applicant (Adenuga) is hereby granted an overnight access to the subject (child) every fortnight from 8 am on Saturday to 12 noon on Sunday,” she ruled. The order, she said, took effect from March 16 and would subsist until the case is determined.

But, Ogun, through her lawyer, Mrs Marian Jones of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), has applied to the magistrate for leave to appeal the ruling.

She is also praying for an order suspending the ruling’s execution, as well as an order praying for a stay of proceedings pending the appeal’s determination.

The magistrate’s absence stalled the application’s hearing on Wednesday. Adenuga also applied to the court to change his counsel from the firm of Adesokan & Adesokan to Akintunde Williams & Co.

In his supporting affidavit in support of his motion for custody, the applicant, who works at Conoil Producing Limited, said he started “an amorous affair” with Ogun in October 2013.

He said she informed him in 2014 that she was pregnant with his child, following which he took full responsibility for their welfare.

Adenuga said he paid for her ante natal care at Reddington Hospital, gave her N100,000 monthly and took her to London where she was delivered of a baby girl on October 23, 2014.

He said he paid the bills worth 22,000 pounds, purchased a first class Lagos-London return ticket for her, and accommodated Ogun and her mother in his Cadogan Gardens, London home.

The applicant said Ogun returned to Lagos last January, three months after her delivery, and denied him access to the child.

“I was denied access by the respondent to see my daughter on the ground that I was not interested in marrying her. I sought her understanding in this regard and reminded her of the fact that we had both agreed to end the relationship as it was heading to nowhere,” he said.

Adenuga said Ogun’s mother insisted that he would only see the child on the condition that he married Ogun. Thus, he was not allowed to see his child between last March and October.

According to him, on one occasion that he was allowed access to the house, he observed that Ogun left his daughter in the care of a security man who doubled as houseboy/nanny and her grandmother, a septuagenarian.

“I was shocked at the unhealthy, unhygienic and unsafe environment in which my daughter was being brought up,” he said, adding that he sends N200,000 to Ogun monthly for their upkeep.

Adenuga said he enrolled his daughter at a “world-class” crèche where he paid N600,000 per term. He said he was only able to see his daughter when he organised a birthday party for her, and when he took her and Ogun to Dubai on holiday.

“On getting back to Nigeria, the respondent reverted to denying me custody and access to my daughter,” he told the court.

On why he wants custody of the child, Adenuga said: “The respondent is unwilling to create time needed to care for my daughter physically, emotionally and mentally and I reasonably believe that my daughter currently lacks motherly attention.”

But Ogun, in her counter-claim, said she never denied Adenuga access to his child. She said from last May to October, she took her daughter to the applicant’s mother’s residence in Victoria Island every weekend.

She said she also took the daughter to the applicant’s father’s house on Banana Island at least thrice a week and sometimes slept over.

According to Ogun, problem arose when Adenuga’s mother demanded that she and the daughter spend two weeks monthly at her residence. Ogun said her family refused because she was not married to Adenuga.

According to her, she was trying to resolve the issue amicably when Adenuga, on October 13 last year, came to her home in company of a policeman demanding that his daughter be produced, and in the process assaulted her mother and damaged her phone when she tried to record the scene.‎

She denied keeping her daughter in the care of a security man, saying: “During my working hours and prior to when my daughter started attending crèche, she is left in the care of my grandmother and my nanny.”

Ogun also denied that her daughter is being brought up in an unhygienic and unsafe environment. She claimed she pays her daughter’s medical bills at Reddington Hospital, adding that Adenuga was not solely responsible for her daughter’s welfare.

Ogun said a doctor certified her daughter to be fit and healthy and that despite being born with a low birth weight of 2.7kg, her current growth pattern was more than satisfactory.‎ Besides, she said the only time her daughter was ill, she was diagnosed with an infection common to children when they start crawling and teething and was promptly treated.

“I have never denied the applicant access to my daughter, rather, he wants custody. I don’t believe it is in my daughter’s interest that the applicant be granted custody of my daughter,” she said.

According to her, Adenuga “is not suited to cope with the demands of having full custody of a 16-month old female child.” She added that “he does not have a definite schedule” and “comes home by 12
