21  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Rafa Benitez To Stay On As Newcastle Manager on: 25-05-2016 02:40 PM
A three-year deal is expected to be announced later on Wednesday which will contain written assurances for the Spaniard on full control of player recruitment and budgets set for the summer and winter transfer windows.

Benitez was travelling to Newcastle from his home on Merseyside on Wednesday morning to complete the formalities before the news is made official.

The 56-year-old signed a three-year deal to become Newcastle boss back in March, when he replaced Steve McClaren, but the contract was reported to include an option to cancel at the end of the season.

Benitez was unable to keep the club in the Premier League, leading to doubts over whether he would stay, but he has now decided to stay on at St James' Park after thrashing out a deal with Magpies owner Mike Ashley and managing director Lee Charnley.

Ashley and Benitez spoke face-to-face for the first time following the Magpies' stunning 5-1 victory over Tottenham on the final day of the Premier League season and negotiations have............READ MORE

22  Forum / Relationships & Romance / Guardiola is the only one to change Manchester United - Cantona on: 25-05-2016 09:26 AM
Jose Mourinho is expected to be named as Manchester United's new manager despite club great Eric Cantona saying incoming Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola would have been a better choice.

Mourinho's agent Jorge Mendes was in talks with United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward in London on Tuesday after Louis van Gaal's troubled two-year reign at Old Trafford ended with his sacking a day earlier.

Former Chelsea boss Mourinho is reported to have been offered a three-year deal worth £15 million per season and would be given a transfer war-chest of around £200 million to revive the troubled Premier League club.

United are believed to have made their interest in Mourinho known to his camp several months ago and the contract negotiations should go smoothly, with the only obstacles believed to be image rights and potential clauses in his severance package at Chelsea.

The deal could be finalised as soon as Wednesday, but Cantona, whose goals helped fire United to four Premier League titles in the 1990s, said the defensive-minded Portuguese was the wrong man for...........READ MORE

23  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Zidane Praises Simeone Ahead Of UCL Final on: 24-05-2016 01:47 PM
Zinedine Zidane had few equals as a player but heading into his first Champions League final as a coach, he admits that unlike Atletico Madrid counterpart Diego Simeone he still has much to learn.

The former France playmaker, who was promoted from Real's reserve team to replace Rafa Benitez in January, steered the side to a runners-up finish in La Liga and Saturday's final in Milan.

Real have won 21 out of 26 games under Zidane and lost two, scoring 71 goals and giving away 18.

Simeone led Atletico to their second Champions League final in three years you can predict if you think that atletico can win it this time.

"He has everything that a coach needs but above all, he knows his team and his players well, which is the most important thing," Zidane told a news conference on Tuesday.

"I have a lot to learn but my enthusiasm to learn is tremendous. This will make me improve. I still have a long journey to be an important coach."

Saturday cannot come soon enough for Zidane, who could become the seventh man to win the European Cup as a player and a coach.

24  Forum / Politics / Ronaldo is fit for Champion League final - Zidane on: 24-05-2016 12:14 PM
Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane insisted the Champions League's top-scorer, Cristiano Ronaldo, will be fit for Saturday's final against Atletico Madrid despite a persistent thigh injury.

Zidane confirmed Ronaldo didn't play in a practice match on Saturday as a precaution.

The three-time World Player of the Year also came off at half-time of Real's final La Liga game of the season - having scored twice in the first half to take his tally for the season to 51 - at Deportivo la Coruna 10 days ago.

"There will be no problem. He felt something on Saturday when we had a game between us and he didn't play as a precaution," Zidane said on Tuesday.

"He will be ready for Saturday and I think we are in good shape physically."

However, there isn't such good news for French defender Raphael Varane as Zidane confirmed he will miss Saturday's final and his participation at Euro 2016 is now in jeopardy due to a hamstring injury.

"It is sure that he will be injured for Saturday," added Zidane.

"I expect he will be out for two or three weeks. I hope for him it isn't as severe as anticipated.

25  Forum / The Buzz Central / Mourinho Set To Fulfil His Dream Of Managing Manchester United on: 24-05-2016 09:00 AM
Jose Mourinho is on the verge of fulfilling his dream of managing Manchester United after Louis van Gaal's troubled two-year reign at Old Trafford came to a bitter end.

Van Gaal said he was "very disappointed" to be sacked on Monday just 48 hours after leading United to victory in the FA Cup final against Crystal Palace.

Missing out on a lucrative Champions League place proved the final straw for the club's United States-based owners, the Glazer family, and they didn't let United's first piece of silverware since the 2013 retirement of legendary boss Alex Ferguson stop them from wielding the axe.

With van Gaal having cleared out his desk at United's Carrington training ground after talks over a settlement for the final year of his three-year contract, which had been worth a reported £6.4 million per year ($9.2 million, 8.2 million euros), the path is clear for former Chelsea manager Mourinho to be confirmed as the new United boss on Tuesday.

Mourinho was sacked by Chelsea in December after a miserable campaign marred by a series of rifts with the club's star players that eventually became intolerable to owner Roman Abramovich as the team, champions just months earlier, languished near the relegation zone. Naijabet

26  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Euro 2016 - Wales coach Coleman signs new deal on: 23-05-2016 04:31 PM
Wales manager Chris Coleman has signed a two-year contract extension, the Football Association of Wales (FAW) announced Monday.

Coleman, who has guided Wales to next month's European Championship in France, had been linked with jobs at Aston Villa and Swansea City in recent weeks.

But he has now signed a new deal that will include the qualifying campaign for the 2018 World Cup.

Coleman succeeded the late Gary Speed, a fellow former Wales international, in January 2012.

By overseeing qualifying for Euro 2016, Coleman took Wales to their first major tournament finals since the 1958 World Cup.

"I am delighted to get this opportunity to build on what we've achieved so far," Coleman said.

"It's a big challenge but it's one that I feel we can conquer," the 45-year-old added.

"Once you've had a taste of club management you do miss that day-to-day involvement because international management can...Read More

Outgoing Italy manager Antonio Conte insisted his focus was fully on the national team's Euro 2016 campaign in France ahead of his move to Chelsea after the conclusion of the 24-team tournament in July.

The 46-year-old, who took over from Cesare Prandelli in August 2014, will replace interim manager Guus Hiddink at the English Premier League side, who finished 10th this season.

"Anyone who knows me knows that I work on things one at a time, and I try to deal with them in the best way," Conte said.

"The Euros is the end of a two-year journey. I want to tackle this tournament in the best way, knowing the difficulties which we didn't expect to ........READ MORE
28  Forum / The Buzz Central / Coppa Final Offers AC Milan Faint Glimmer Of Hope on: 19-05-2016 02:50 PM
The Coppa Italia final offers AC Milan a faint chance of redemption after another dismal season of failure, and the prospect of claiming their first piece of silverware since 2011.

But they will have to beat an almost impregnable Juventus side, who are aiming to complete their second league-and-cup-double in a row, to do it.

Milan, who will miss out on European competition for a third season in a row unless they win on Saturday, have performed so badly on the pitch that their president has threatened to stop paying the players's wages.

Juventus, on the other hand, have just won their fifth successive league title, thanks to a run of 26 wins in 27 matches.

Having promised to invest in young Italian players, Milan's transfer policy has instead left them with a motley assortment of.......READ MORE

29  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Pep Hopes To Win German Cup As Parting Gift To Bayern Munich on: 19-05-2016 01:44 PM
Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola will be hoping his players deliver on their promise of a parting gift when they take on Borussia Dortmund in the German Cup final on Saturday as he looks to leave Germany on a high note.

The Spaniard, who takes over Manchester City next season, could win his second domestic double in three seasons after Bayern eased to a record fourth consecutive Bundesliga title last week.

However, a failure to win the Champions League, which had been his mandate from the very start, has certainly taken the sheen off Guardiola's three-year stint at Bayern despite an utter dominance over his home rivals during that spell.

Atletico Madrid proved to strong for Bayern in the semifinals of this season's tournament, making it three years in a....READ MORE

Sevilla survived a first-half battering before hitting back with three second-half goals, two from Coke, to beat Liverpool 3-1 in the Europa League final in Basel, Switzerland, on Wednesday and win the trophy for the third season in a row.

Liverpool dominated the early stages and went ahead through an exquisite goal by England striker Daniel Sturridge, who nonchalantly curled an inswinging shot inside the far post with the outside of his left foot.

Sevilla clung on until halftime and hit back dramatically when Kevin Gameiro turned in Mariano Perreira's cross less than one minute after the re-start.

Coke fired Sevilla ahead and added a controversial third after the linesman initially raised his flag for offside, only for referee Jonas Eriksson to award the goal following a lengthy consultation.

"This is our competition. We did an amazing................READ MORE

31  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / John Terry signs a new one-year deal with Chelsea on: 18-05-2016 03:54 PM
Chelsea captain John Terry signed a new one-year contract with the Premier League club on Wednesday to end speculation he would be forced out of Stamford Bridge.

Terry sparked fears he was on the verge of leaving Chelsea against his will when he claimed in January he hadn't been offered an extension to his contract, which was due to expire in June.

With Italy coach Antonio Conte due to take charge at Stamford Bridge once his Euro 2016 commitments are over, it had been reported Terry could be eased out by the new boss.

But the 35-year-old former England defender was offered the new deal last week and, after speaking to Conte and Blues owner Roman Abramovich, he agreed to extend his 21-year stay with Chelsea by at least another season.

"I am delighted to sign a new contract with the club. Everyone knows I'm Chelsea through and through," Terry told Chelsea's website.

Wayne Rooney insists he is willing to permanently give up his role as the spearhead of Manchester United's forward line to move into a midfield berth.

Rooney won the man-of-the-match award for his influential display in midfield during United's 3-1 win against Bournemouth on Tuesday and is keen to keep that role in the future.

Aware that he is no longer the same bundle of energy that burst onto the Premier League stage as a teenage striker with Everton, the 30-year-old has impressed in a deeper midfield role under United manager Louis van Gaal in recent months.

Some pundits wondered whether Rooney might take the move into midfield as a snub, but the United and England captain believes the switch could be a major benefit in the twilight of his...................READ MORE

Real Madrid and France defender Raphael Varane is confident Les Bleus have the right mixture of youth and experience to lead them to victory on home soil at Euro 2016.

Varane, 23, is one of a number of talented younger players including Juventus' Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial of Manchester United and Atletico Madrid rival Antoine Griezmann who will carry French hopes of replicating their success of winning the Euros and World Cup at home in 1984 and 1998 respectively.

However, Varane believes their experience of dealing with the relentless pressure of playing at Europe's top clubs will help them deal with the expectations of a nation.

Louis van Gaal was booed by his club's own fans after Manchester United ended their Premier League campaign by beating Bournemouth 3-1 in Tuesday's re-arranged Old Trafford fixture.

In a game carried over from Sunday following a postponement caused by the discovery of a fake bomb accidentally left behind during a terror training exercise, United needed a 19-goal victory in order to steal past Manchester City into the fourth and final Champions League qualifying berth.

Goals from Wayne Rooney, 18-year-old Marcus Rashford, named in England's provisional Euro 2016 squad a day earlier, and substitute Ashley Young secured the three points, but it was only enough to lift Van Gaal's side above Southampton into fifth place.

Introduced to the crowd for a post-match address, the Dutchman was booed by pockets of the home support, before declaring, somewhat ironically: "I want to......Read More

Newcastle United should tie down manager Rafael Benitez as he would not only ensure they make an immediate return to the Premier League but also transform the side into a force in the top-flight, winger Andros Townsend has said.

Newcastle ended their campaign in style as they romped to a 5-1 win over third-placed Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, but it was not enough to avoid relegation as they finished third from bottom, two points behind bitter rivals Sunderland.

"It would be massive for Newcastle to keep Rafa as manager. He's one of the best managers in the world. If we can keep a manager of that calibre and keep doing the right things we'll build," Townsend, who was recalled to the England squad for the Euro 2016 on Monday, told British media.
