1  Forum / The Buzz Central / BECCA: A SUPER-TALENTED ARTISTE MAKING AFRICA GREAT on: 21-08-2016 01:36 AM
On a continent where contemporary pop music is dominated by men, Becca is successfully proving that what a man can do a woman can do better. Yes, she is making strong statements through her music and accomplished feats. In this piece we will review Becca’s childhood, music career success, and everything in-between. Becca was born Rebecca Akosua Acheampomaa Acheampong on 15th August, 1984 in Kumasi, capital of Ashanti Region, Ghana. She is a Ghanaian singer, songwriter and actress. Becca is the first girl and fifth child in a Christian family of nine. In her childhood she was active in church activities. She also attended some of the most prestigious schools in Ghana like Morning Star School, and Wesley Girls’ High School in Cape Coast. Becca later relocated to the UK where she attended London’s Croydon College. Even at school, she never relented in practicing music and participating actively in music related activities like school talent hunt shows – because of her love for music. Fortunately for her, she always steals the show. Her friends knew she was a musical prodigy at the time. Well, she studied to qualify as a childcare and education worker in London.
After her education she stayed abroad for a while before returning to Ghana to continue to pursue her dreams. As a grown woman who has always had strong passion for music, she continued in the musical path. As a beautifully talented singer, her talents invariably made her stand out. She later got into the 2nd season of hit singing competition, Mentor on TV3 – a Ghanaian TV show. Afterwards, she backed out of it due to a misunderstanding which ensued between her management and the show organizers. The show helped to propel her to limelight so much so that when she started working as a solo artiste, she got signed on to EKB records by Kiki Benson. In 2007, she started working on her debut album, Sugar. Sugar was released the same year and went ahead to record massive sales both in Ghana and beyond.

There is a popular saying that there is ability in disability. Well, if you are one of those Africans who believes that this saying is one of those unrealistic quotes you hear every day, then you are so wrong. This is because I trust you will have a cause to have a rethink after reading this piece on Cobhams Asuquo. Well, the story you are about to peruse is that of a man whose dogged determination paid off despite his disability. Please read on as we examine the life and career of Cobhams Asuquo.

Cobhams Emmanuel Asuquo is a Nigerian-born award-wining musician, songwriter, and producer with a visual impairment. He was born on 6th January, 1981 in Jos, Nigeria to the family of Mr. and Mrs. Asuquo. Even though, Cobhams cannot see like every other person, he determined to make something great out of his life. Originally, Cobhams wanted to be a lawyer, but because of the passion he had for music as a little boy, he changed his career path and moved into music; a decision which later took him places. When he took the decision to change his career choice, Cobhams recalled that his family supported the decision unlike many other African parents. Born into a Catholic home, he had a flair for Gospel music. As time went on he began to sharpen his musical skills until he was convinced he could make good music. So, in 2005, he was signed on to Sony ATV London as a songwriter. In 2006, he decided to set up his own recording facility. He named the label CAMP: Cobhams Asuquo Music Productions. The label, up till now, is involved in everything music: discovering talents, growing them and recording for popular ones. The label released Bez’s 15-track album titled Super Sun in 2011 – making it the first studio album to be released by CAMP. The first awarding-wining album from Asa (self-titled album) was produced by CAMP. Asa is a popular Nigerian soul sensation – the album sold over 400,000 copies worldwide.

Hollywood films are arguably the best films in the world today by all standards for many reasons. From rich acting background of its cast to mastery interpretation of daring roles, from huge budgets to massive international media attention, etc. Those are some of the features that make Hollywood films outstanding. Perhaps those factors explain why many African movie icons, who seemingly have conquered entertainment scene in Africa, wish to go further into Hollywood and showcase their talent to the world. While a few names have made their way to Hollywood, regrettably, a lot more have been unable to satisfy this burning desire. Unlike the latter who are still in this struggle, the same cannot be said of Abraham Attah. Yes, his story was an entirely different story because Hollywood came calling – a good example of Oprah Winfrey’s definition of luck: where preparation meets opportunity. In this piece of Abraham Attah’s debut in Hollywood, we will explore how the youngster made his way to Hollywood – a feat that more experienced colleagues haven’t been able to achieve – and how he inspires kids like him from across the continent.
