AS the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, kick-starts implementation of the Minimum Safety Standard for Trucks in Nigeria today 1st March, FRSC Corps Marshal, Mr Boboye Oyeyemi, has disclosed that over 1,000 people have so far lost their lives between December 2016 and January 2017 as a result of auto crashes caused by tanker drivers.
Vanguard reports that the FRSC boss also said that about 308 auto crashes have been recorded between December 2016 and January 2017 due to recklessness of truck and tanker drivers. In most of the accidents, he said, the vehicles are usually written off while goods are lost.
 

Oyeyemi stated these in Apapa, Lagos, yesterday 28th February, at a one-day sensitisation workshop for truck drivers on the minimum safety standard for trucks at the secretariat of the Association of Maritime Truck Owners (AMARTO).
Represented by Deputy Corps Marshal, Operations, Mrs Ojeme Ewhrudjakpor, Oyeyemi said the implementation of the scheme is to improve on the minimum standards already established by the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA).
He charged truck owners to ensure compliance with the minimum standard for trucks, which includes installing speed limit devices, ensuring that containers are properly latched, proper functioning of head lights, tail lights and other parts of the trucks.
He assured that engagement with operators will continue even as implementation is being carried out. Also speaking, President of Corporate Fleet Owners Association, Mrs Folake George, assured that truck owners are ready to comply with the safety standards by FRSC and NPA.
She, however, lamented the duplication of transport regulatory agencies and high cost of maintenance, which make truck owners to constantly run at a loss.
 
Mrs George also lamented that container truck owners are over-taxed compared to their contemporaries in the petroleum tanker business, who are given preferential treatments.

US President Donald Trump on Thursday, February 16, dropped his appeal of a court ruling that suspended his travel ban on refugees and travelers from seven predominantly Muslim nations.

However, Trump has said he would replace the measure with a modified version.
 

The Justice Department announced the move in a brief filed with the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco.
It said the new order would address complaints from a three-judge panel that parts of the order were unconstitutional.
Rather than continuing this litigation, the President intends in the near future to rescind the Order and replace it with a new, substantially revised Executive Order to eliminate what the panel erroneously thought were constitutional concerns, the statement read.

An eight year old boy shot his five-year-old sister dead when they were left home alone with a loaded gun, as the police arrested their mothers lover on Monday, over the incident.

 The SunUK reported that, police said the little girl, Serenity Allen, was shot dead when her older brother fired a single round from a gun while they were inside their apartment, as their mother had left to go to a store when the shooting happened on Saturday.
 
However, the police have ruled the killing as an accident but on Sunday, February 5, her 34-year-old boyfriend, Maurice Mobley, was arrested by the police after he turned himself in. He was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
 Officer Christian Hancock said in a news release that police believe Mobley was the person who brought the gun into the family's house.

- A seven-year old pupil is said to have died in a primary school building that collapsed in Guma local government area of Benue state

  A seven-year-old pupil is said to have died in a primary school building that collapsed in Guma local government area of Benue state.
Nyom Godwin, a pupil of Victory international Nursery and Primary School, Daudu, was reportedly killed when a section of a block of two classrooms collapsed on Tuesday, February 2.
Four other pupils sustained various degrees of injury from the incident.
 

It was gathered that the incident occurred at about 11 am when the pupils of the school were on a break.
A head teacher Jeremiah Agba who confirmed the incident said, the pupils were eating when the building collapsed.
Agba said: The ugly incident happened when the pupils were eating behind the building during break time; unfortunately, we lost a seven-year-old pupil on the spot.
Another, Mlankyaa Nguevese had a fracture on one of his legs while three others sustained minor injuries.
 

The injured pupils are receiving treatment at a hospital while the body of the deceased has been buried at his home town, Tse-Hungwa, Ugondu, Guma LGA of the state, Agba said.
Also speaking, the special adviser to the Benue state governor on education Matthew Mnyam directed that the part of the school building which was still standing be pulled down.
Mnyam who gave the direction when he visited the school urged staff of the primary school to also ensure that the school is always clean.
Also, the principal of the school Mlankyaa Francis, who thanked the governors special adviser said all observations raised, will be corrected with immediate effect.

 Oxfam, the world's leading charity organization, estimates that Bill Gates' net worth is increasing at a rate of 11 percent every year. Based on this, it projects his net worth to be over a trillion dollars in 25 years.
This projection would hold true even if Gates continues to give away billions through his well-known charity foundation.
 
Forbes magazine already estimates that Gates net worth jumped by $10 billion to $85 billion dollars in January this year.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have declared their support for Nigeria's music legend, 2baba as he leads a nationwide protest this weekend.
According to the spokespersons of the two major political parties, the planned protests are within the confines of the law and should not be disrupted by the Nigerian Police.
Speaking to Thisday, the national publicity of the APC, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi said there was nothing wrong in people holding peaceful protest under a democracy.
He said the APC was not opposed to any form of expression of opposing view point by anyone so far it is done in a peaceful and non-violent manner and did not constitute disruption of public peace.


His words: For us, it is about the constitution of Nigeria, Tuface or any other citizen of the country has the right to stage a peaceful protest, that is the position of our constitution.
We as a party will not be part of anything that will abridge or take away the right of citizens to protest, especially in a democracy.
We have as a party benefited greatly from citizens right to express their democratic rights and our being in government is not going to change that orientation to promote the liberties and right of citizen hold dessenting views.
Abdullahi added that the protests will be a form of feedback for the APC to do more in citizens engagement and enlightenment and also focus more on the promises the party made to Nigerians during the electioneering period.
I do not see it as anything that is antithetical to our democracy, he added.
On its part, the PDP described the reported ban of the protest as an undemocratic act which should be resisted.
The PDP spokesman, Dayo Adeyeye urged the protesters to defy any such order by the police, adding that stopping people for engaging in peacefully assembly is not only undemocratic but against the spirit and letters of the countrys constitution.

 
His words: It is illegal and very undemocratic, the people have the right to protest, the freedom of assembly and freedom to protest are two strong ingredients of a democracy.
In America, people have been protesting everywhere and nobody has made any effort to curtail it or to ban them or prevent them from holding.
People have the rights to peaceful assembly and people had the right to protest under the previous regimes of Presidents Goodluck Jonathan, Umaru Musa YarAdua and Olusegun Obasanjo, how could these people now want to stop peaceful protest.
These were the same people organising protests in those days against PDP governments.
This shows clearly that we are now under a dictatorial regime. It is an illegal ban and I will urge the organisers of the protest to go ahead with it and defy the police ban because it is wrong.
The protest rally is being planned to take place simultaneously in some major cities across the country, including Lagos state, Abuja and Asaba.

Angry residents of Ondo state have reportedly attacked the out-going governor of Ondo state, Olusegun Mimiko.

  The hoodlums, it was learnt, destroyed two vehicles in the convoy of the governor and prevented him from presenting the states 2017 budget at the House of Assembly.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the governor was forced to postpone the presentation of the budget, especially as the protest became violent.
Some of the protesters reportedly sustained serious injury in the pandemonium that followed a clash with security agents.

 
The protest started on Wednesday, February 1 with the angry residents of the state claiming the out-going governor was planning to sponsor 38 bills and ensure that the bills were passed into law before his tenure expired on February 23, 2017.
The report said once the protesters sighted the governors convoy on the road leading to the House of Assembly, they began to throw stones and other objects.
It was learnt that the leader of the protesters, Mr Saka Yusuf-Ogunleye, condemned the action of the police in dispersing them, saying that the protest was not a violent one.
He said: We dont know why there is this issue of sporadic shooting by the police in a peaceful protest.
It is uncalled for, and we are calling on the Inspector General of Police, well-meaning Nigerians and citizens of Ondo State to look into the matter.
What we are protesting for is to tell our people that the governor is bringing a bill that will bring untold hardship to the people of the state. We are not violent with it.
The spokesperson of the police in the state, Mr Femi Joseph, confirmed the incident adding that the protesters had been dispersed.

 
Some of them attacked the convoy of the governor; about two vehicles in the convoy were damaged by the protesters.
We initially allowed them to protest peacefully, we also appealed to them to be peaceful but when they started barricading the road throwing stones at the governors convoy, we have to disperse them, he said.

The proposed $1.5 billion (about N450 billion) counterpart funding from China for the Lagos-Ibadan rail project set to commence in March, has been secured by the Federal Government.

The Minister for Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, made the disclosure on Wednesday when he appeared before the Gbenga Ashafa-led Senate committee on land transport to give report of his ministrys 2016 budget and defend the proposal for 2017.
  In the first quarter of 2017, the foundation of the Lagos-Ibadan segment two of the Lagos-Kano rail project will be laid, said Mr. Amaechi; adding that, the implication here is that we will start the Lagos-Ibadan rail line before the end of March.

Our target is to commence from the Apapa seaport down to Ogun and then to Ibadan.

Lagos-Ibadan rail line is a segment of the Lagos-Kano railway project, one of the most important and ambitious infrastructural targets of the Muhammadu Buhari-led All Progressives Congress government.

In January, the government announced wholesale release of N72 billion as Nigerias counterpart funding for the Lagos-Ibadan railway.
Amaechiexplained to the senators that the $1.5 billion counterpart funding had been approved by China and was being processed by the China Exim Bank.
The counterpart funding is ready, but dont forget that we are borrowing the money from China. The China Exim Bank is processing it.


Our 15 per cent is ready; so, we are waiting for China Exim Bank. They have managed to release and approve $1.5 billion for the Lagos-Ibadan line.

It is also envisaged that segment three of the Lagos-Kano rail project, which is the Kano-Kaduna stretch, as well as the first phase of the coastal railway line Lagos-Calabar, commencing from Calabar to Port Harcourt with extension to the Onne Deep Seaport will commence after the conclusion of the negotiation of a financing loan agreement, said Mr. Amaechi.
He then urged the National Assembly to approve the $30 billion national (rolling) borrowing plan of the government. He said the approval was essential for securing funds needed to finance rail projects in the country.

The National Assembly needs to give us approval for the borrowing plan so that we can commence work. We cant sign the loan agreement with China unless there is an approval from the National Assembly.

What the National Assembly has approved is the counterpart funding, but we need the approval to borrow the remaining money. If you look at $6.1 billion in naira, and we are paying 15 per cent, you will know that the remaining amount is coming from China and until we have approval, we cannot do anything.

Even now, the China Exim Bank has approved $1.5 billion for the Lagos-Ibadan line. We are not able to sign the loan agreement because we need the approval of the National Assembly.

On the performance of the 2016 budget, the minister said uncompleted projects in the previous year had been included in the proposed 2017 budget.
Speaking for the Senate, Mr. Ashafa promised cooperation with the transportation ministry to ensure implementation of the infrastructural objectives.

The federal government has told ASUP that lecturers on strike will not be paid. The response came after the polytechnic lecturers embarked on industrial action.

On Tuesday, January 31, the federal government while speaking through a representative in Abuja indicated that it would implement the No work, No pay rule on polytechnic lecturers currently on strike.
Chris Ngige who is the minister of labour and employment, appealed with the lecturers involved in the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) industrial action, to suspend their 5-day warning strike.
The lecturers had embarked on the warning strike on Monday to protest non-payment of salaries among other issues.


According to NAN, Ngige said: I wish to remind the Trade Unions that there is nothing like a Warning Strike in our National Industrial Relations System (NIRS).
