Seun Kuti, a Nigerian artist, has claimed that he is the only musician in Nigeria that prevents fans from spraying him with cash notes while playing.

He further alleged that many performers, particularly fuji musicians, laud people in songs during their performances solely so they can be sprayed.

Kuti made the assertions in the context of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) crackdown on Naira abusers.

Speaking in a video message shared via his Instagram account, he said: “I don’t even like to be sprayed. I’m the only artist that stops people from spraying me. Even my dad, the legendary Fela didn’t prevent people from spraying him but he demanded the denominations he wanted to be sprayed.

Ric Hassani, a Nigerian singer and songwriter, has expressed his perspective on the Afrobeats genre.

He stated that previous hit songs were of high quality, however contemporary hit songs are “not very good music”.

Hassani appeared recently on Channels TV’s Rubbin’ Minds with Ebuka.

He said, “Afrobeats is Nigerian music. Our guys are top 10 and I feel like because of that the quality of music might stop dropping because more people want to get in. So the quality is really dropping.

“Back in the days, hit songs were serious music but now almost anybody is just coming in. Most of the hit songs in Nigeria now are not very good music. Back in the days it wasn’t like this. I feel like because we have been number one for so long, everybody is just dropping whatever they like and throwing money behind it.”
8  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / 500 Lawyers Storm Supreme Court Over Planned Arrest Of Ex-kogi Gov, Yahaya Bello On Fraud on: 23-04-2024 09:21 AM

No fewer than 500 legal practitioners from across the country, yesterday, stormed the Supreme Court in protest against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC’s move to arrest the immediate past Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, over alleged fraud.

The lawyers described EFCC’s approach as illegal. In a statement signed by its co-convener, SK Alewu, the group lamented the EFCC’s attempt to arrest the former governor despite being served a valid court order that restrains them from doing so.

Alewu noted that not only has Bello’s fundamental rights been breached, he said the judiciary has become willing tools in the hands of enemies of our rule of law. The lawyers, therefore, urged the Nigerian Judicial Council (NJC) and President Bola Tinubu to call the EFCC to order to stop further abuse and disobedience of court orders.

The statement read in part:
Quote
“It has become pertinent, again, that we address well-meaning Nigerians on the current attacks on the judiciary by the very institutions created by law to enforce and guarantee the sanctity of our judicial processes.

“As young lawyers, we envisage a judiciary where justice is not only done but also seen to be manifestly done. It is in our patriotic quest to always pursue ventures that guarantee an independent judiciary that dispenses justice without fear nor favour that we formed this civil society of lawyers.

“We are, therefore, perturbed that desperate politicians and corrupt elements in our polity are working very assiduously to bring the judiciary that sacrificed its all to guard its jurisdiction jealously under the military regime to public odium and opprobrium.

“It is more worrisome that even the very institutions that are created by law to enforce our laws have become willing tools in the hands of enemies of our rule of law and the judiciary to harangue our judges and bring the justice system to public ridicule.

“The current case between the EFCC and Gov Yahaya is the most heinous of such instances. It is sickening that the Commission will move to lay siege and even attempt to arrest the former governor of Kogi State, despite being served a valid court order that restrains them from doing so and without vacating the said order.

“The events of the past few days are capable of eroding the many gains and national acclaim the Commission recorded and enjoys from majority of Nigerians who sees the establishment of the Commission as the greatest intervention to the endemic corruption that has rocked our public service and government institutions since the return of Nigeria to democracy in 1999.

“The only succour is that the current President of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, is a leader who gave his all to sustain our democracy. The President, at a point, became a victim of political witch-hunt. “We have submitted petitions to the Nigerian Judicial Council and the President, asking that they use their good offices to call the EFCC to order and stop any form of abuse and disobedience of court orders.”

In a related development, hearing in the appeal filed by the EFCC against the judgment of the Kogi State High Court, which barred the EFCC from arresting the former governor was stalled at the Court of Appeal yesterday.

Police authorities in Kenya have  arrested Nadeem Anjarwalla, an executive of cryptocurrency platform, Binance, who fled Nigeria some weeks ago.

Anjarwalla had escaped from custody in Nigeria, following Federal government’s crackdown on the cryptocurrency platform in a bid to strengthen the naira.

While the government later traced Anjarwalla to the East African nation, multiple reports said the Binance executive was now in the custody of the Kenyan police.

According to the reports, government sources in Kenya confirmed that the Binance chief is now in the custody of the country’s police.

Since he escaped from Nigeria, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, the International Criminal Police, the Nigeria Police Force, NPF, and the Kenyan Police Service have been in talks to extradite Anjarwalla.

In March, EFCC confirmed plans to extradite the Binance chief in the agency’s bulletin for the month.

The anti-graft agency’s chief, Ola Olukoyede, had said.

The takeover of the prosecution of Binance chiefs by the commission is no less a strong message in the direction of EFCC’s resolve to hedge in distortions and disruptions in the country’s forex market.

“Tax evasion, currency speculation, and money laundering to the tune of $35,400,000 and are at the foundation of the Commission’s five counts against Binance Holdings Limited, Tigran Gambaryan and Nadeem Anjarwalla, the company’s chief executives.

“While Gambaryan is currently in the commission’s net, the process of extraditing the fleeing Anjarwalla is revving in full swing.

”Involved in partnership with the EFCC to nick Anjarwalla in flight are the International Criminal Police Organisation, the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation, the governments of the United Kingdom, Northern Ireland, and Kenya as the clock winds down to his arraignment in absentia alongside the company and Gambaryan.”

18  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Yoruba Nation: Akintoye, Sunday Igboho Write Open Letter To Tinubu, Seek Exit From Nigeria on: 22-04-2024 11:33 PM

The Yoruba Self-determination Movement, led by Banji Akintoye and Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has written an open letter to President Bola Tinubu, seeking a peaceful breakaway of the Yoruba people from Nigeria.

In the letter signed by Mr Akintoye, Mr Adeyemo and Ola Ademola, the trio urged the President to establish a negotiation team with the group within the next two months and have a dialogue with them.

This is coming days after suspected Yoruba nation agitators attempted an invasion of the Oyo State government secretariat.

Recall that both Igboho and Mr Akintoye had distanced themselves from the actions of the agitators.

The group, in the letter, alleged that the Fulani have been killing and destroying Yoruba communities since 2015 with an estimated 29,000 Yoruba people killed to date.

According to the group, the Fulani attacks and killings have led to instability and forced many farmers to abandon their farms, potentially leading to years of famine.

It added that it has no confidence in the proposed restructuring of Nigeria as it would not prevent the Fulani from continuing their attacks.

The group called for a peaceful negotiation to separate the Yoruba nation from Nigeria with the involvement of international observers from the United Nations, African Union and ECOWAS.

Quote
“We have the honour to send to Your Excellency this important letter on behalf of the many millions of Yoruba people at home in Yorubaland in Nigeria and the Diaspora in almost all countries across the world.

“We send this letter as a follow-up to our earlier letter, dated 6 August 2022, which we delivered to your predecessor, President Muhammadu Buhari, in his exalted position then as President of Nigeria.

“Since 2015, the Fulani have been killing widely among the other peoples of Nigeria, including us Yoruba, destroying farms, villages and other assets, kidnapping men, women and children, extorting large amounts of money as ransom from friends and family of the kidnapped, and repeatedly asserting their intention to seize the homelands of all the indigenous peoples of Nigeria for the purpose of turning all into a Fulani homeland,”
the letter read in part.

The group noted that in the Middle Belt, horrendous blood-letting was going on with many families forced into Internally Displaced People (IDP) camps while many of their villages were seized by the Fulani and renamed as Fulani villages.

In the Yoruba homeland, the group observed that people have been resisting somewhat better, but that the Fulani attacks, killings and kidnappings have been unrelenting and are coming daily, leading to horrific instability and forcing most farmers to abandon farming.

It lamented that the situation was dooming Yoruba people to years and years of famine.

“All these actions by the Fulani are to us Yoruba, a sufficient reason for our seeking to separate our Yoruba nation from Nigeria. Most of us, Yoruba, have no confidence in the ‘restructuring’ that some of our most respected Yoruba leaders, such as our fathers in our highly exalted Afenifere, are advocating.

“And our reason is that we know that restructuring cannot keep the Fulani marauders away from our homeland. Since, after restructuring, the Fulani would still be Nigerians like us, and would still have full citizens’ rights to come in large numbers, and with weapons and intent to kill and destroy and seize land…”
the group stated.

It contended that the Fulani elite seemed determined to make Nigeria ungovernable for President Tinubu and that they would never accept any official action of his.

It urged the federal government to agree to its proposal to negotiate the Yoruba nation’s exit.

“We are acting for and on behalf of our 60 million Yoruba people of the Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, and Oyo State, respectively, plus the Yoruba Local Government Areas of Kogi and Kwara State, plus the Itsekiri homeland of Delta State, all together constituting the Yorubaland in Nigeria, hereby most humbly place our crowning request before Your Excellency as follows:

“That the Nigerian Federal Government shall, within the next two months, but not later than 15 June 2024, inform us Yoruba Self-determination Movement that the Nigerian Federal Government has graciously agreed to our proposal for negotiation and that they have set up a negotiation team that will meet and have a dialogue with our Yoruba nation’s negotiation team.

“That the Nigerian Federal Government shall invite the United Nations, African Union and the Economic Community of West African States to send observers to the negotiation meetings,”
it said.
19  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / EFCC Denies Disobeying Court's Order In Botched Arrest Of Yahaya Bello on: 22-04-2024 11:29 PM

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday denied disobeying any court order in trying to arrest former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello.

The commission said it cleared the air against the backdrop of arguments and counter-arguments on whether it had disobeyed a court order concerning the botched arrest of  Bello.

In a Press Statement signed by the EFCC’s Acting Director, Public Affairs, Wilson Uwujaren, the Commission clearly pointed out that though Bello sought refuge in a fundamental rights enforcement action through an order granted by Justice Isa Jamil Abdulallahi of the Kogi State High Court, the order did not vitiate or nullify an order made by the Federal High Court for the arrest of the former governor for the purpose of his arraignment.

“The enrolled order of the Kogi State High Court only granted an order to enforce Bello’s right to personal liberty and freedom of movement, it didn’t preclude the Federal High Court ‘to make any Order as it may deem just in the determination of the rights of the Applicant and the Respondent as may be submitted to her for consideration and determination”, he said.

He further stressed that, “The Order made by the Federal High Court for the arrest of Mr. Yahaya Bello for the purpose of his arraignment is not in conflict with the Order of the Kogi State High Court. The case before the Federal High Court is a criminal charge which is different from the fundamental rights enforcement action that is the subject of an appeal.”

Uwujaren pointed out that the EFCC had a shining track record in the prosecution of politically exposed persons and would continue to exercise its mandate in the overall interest of the nation.

He admonished Bello to turn himself in and answer to the charges preferred against him by the Commission.

He called on all patriotic Nigerians to lend their voices in support of the Commission stressing that “the EFCC will not relent in its quest to wrestle corruption to the ground.”
20  Forum / Sports / Iran Top Football Club's Goalkeeper Suspended For Embracing Female Fan on: 22-04-2024 11:25 PM

A goalkeeper with one of Iran’s top football clubs has been suspended after he embraced a woman supporter during a championship match, sports daily Khabar Varzeshi reported on Monday.

Hossein Hosseini, 31, who plays for Tehran team Esteghlal, was suspended after the incident on April 12.

The Esteghlal fan rushed onto the pitch where stadium security attempted to detain her. Hosseini approached the woman while security staff were trying to hold her back and briefly took her into his arms.

The newspaper said Iran’s football federation fined the goalkeeper the equivalent of $4,700 and gave him a one-match suspension for “bad behaviour towards security agents at the game”.

Women were generally barred from attending football matches following the 1979 Islamic revolution, but in August 2022 they were allowed into a championship match for the first time in more than 40 years.

Hosseini has spent most of his footballing career at Esteghlal, one of the most popular clubs in the country.

He played for Iran in a 2022 World Cup match against England after the first-choice goalkeeper was injured.

Esteghlal, known as “The Blues”, are currently top of the Iranian league with just six matches to go.
