3  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / EFCC Warns Nigerians To Stop Sending Congratulatory Message To Newly Appointed Chairman, Bawa on: 3-03-2021 08:00 AM

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has warned Nigerians to stop sending congratulatory messages to Adulrasheed Bawa, its newly appointed Chairman.

The anti-graft commission said it has observed the increasing number of congratulatory messages published in the print media by groups and individuals, adding that it is gradually turning into a distraction.

The new EFCC boss was confirmed by the Senate last week following his nomination by President Muhammadu Buhari and the agency noted that Bawa was assuming the leadership of the commission at a time of great challenge.

According to EFCC’s Facebook post, the new Chairman desires to hit the ground running and will not like to be distracted but needs the support of all well-meaning individuals.

The anti-graft agency said that its new boss is appealing to his admirers who are publishing congratulatory messages on the media to channel such resources to making donations to Orphanages and Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, camps.

Quote
“While the open exhibition of affection and solidarity may be salutary in our cultural milieu, and indeed appreciated, it is however inauspicious at this point in time and gradually turning into a distraction.

“What he needs from well-wishers and indeed all Nigerians, is support and prayers, and more importantly, credible information that will further the work of the Commission.

“He, therefore, appeals to all his admirers and well-wishers who might have the intention of demonstrating their love and support for him through paid newspaper advertisement to desist, and instead channel such resources to more worthy causes, such as making donations to Orphanages and Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, camps,”
the agency said.

11  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / "Teach Them How To Raise The Alarm If They Notice Strange Movement" -Plateau Women Tell FG on: 2-03-2021 08:25 PM

The Plateau branch of the Women’s Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria, on Tuesday, called for security drills for students and staff in the face of repeated abductions in schools.

Mrs Rhodo Jahota, the Chairperson, told newsmen in Jos, the state capital: “Government should teach security drills in schools, particularly in those that did not have security personnel.

“Teach them how to raise the alarm if they notice any abnormal movement because we cannot say schools should begin to build fences and gates and install other security gadgets now.

“It is my earnest call and desire that the government of Plateau should strengthen security systems especially in schools.”

Jahota said the teaching of security drills could forestall some challenges, adding that strange movements and persons should also be reported to the appropriate authorities.

“The government of Plateau should strengthen security systems and we, the residents, should watch those coming in and going out in our areas.

“If we notice strange people, we should be able to cry out and investigate,’’ she said.

Similarly, the Executive Director of a non-governmental organisation, Girls’ Education Mission, Mrs. Keturah Shammah, said abductions would discourage the attainment of education, especially for the girl-child.

She expressed concerns that parents would not release their children to go to school with rampant banditry, terrorism and other security threats.

“This will further increase the rate of female dropouts as most parents may not have confidence in sending their children to school, most especially girls,” she said.

Shammah urged governments at all levels to place premium on education by making the security of schools top priority, saying, “government should send police and soldiers to every school.”

Vanguard has reported cases of students’ abduction in the last few weeks, the latest being that of Jangebe schoolgirls.

Read the experience of the kidnapped schoolgirls HERE and HERE, and their release (pictures) HERE. And Governor Matawalle said repentant bandits helped secure the girls’ freedom.

15  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / UPDATE: EFCC Arraign Dutch, Pieter Borremans & Wife, Nkechi Over N125.7M Fraud In Lagos on: 2-03-2021 07:59 PM

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday arraigned a Dutch, Pieter Borremans, and his wife, Nkechi Borremans, on fraud charges involving $330,000.

They alleged that the defendants received the money, equivalent to about an N125.7million at official exchange rate, for the sale of a marine tanker vessel which they were said to have failed to deliver to the buyer.

The commission said in a statement that the duo was arraigned alongside their firm, Lagon Trade Limited, on two counts of conspiracy and obtaining by false pretence.

According to the statement, the defendants pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to them before E. A Obile of the Federal High Court, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The anti-graft agency said investigation into the alleged crime followed the complaint by a petitioner who alleged that his companies Jackkyson Multi Services Limited and Alot General services Limited, allegedly offered to purchase a marine tanker vessel from Lagon Trade Limited for $1,100,000.

The petitioner was said to have made a part payment of $330,000 for the vessel.

The defendants allegedly vanished into thin air after collecting the money and all efforts to get a refund or delivery of the vessel proved abortive.

The EFCC said their offence is contrary to Section 1(1) (a) and (2) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act 2006 and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act.

One of the counts reads:
Quote
“That you, Peiter Borremans, Nkechi Borremans, and Lagon Trade Limited, on or about the 31st day of July 2014 at Port Harcourt within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court with intent to defraud did obtain the sum of Three Hundred and Thirty Thousand Dollars ($330,000:00) only from Jackkyson Multi Services Limited and Alot General Services Limited, as advance payment meant for the purchase of Marine Tanker Vessel, a pretext you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 1(1)(a) and (2) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act.”

19  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / ALERT: Researchers Claim COVID 19 Vaccine, Pfizer Will Be Less Active In Fat People on: 2-03-2021 08:30 AM

Scientists have warned that the coronavirus vaccine manufactured by Pfizer may be less effective in people who are obese.
Researchers in Italy have said obese people may need bigger doses, or another top-up jab, to protect them against the virus.

They claim this is because compared to healthy people severely overweight healthcare workers generated only half the antibodies to fend off Covid-19 after receiving two doses of the Pfizer jab.

Antibodies are virus-fighting proteins that can stop coronavirus infection.

They are a major part of the immune system but there are other parts too.

This is a double blow to severely overweight people as they are already considered to be more at risk of becoming critically ill or dying if they contract the virus.

Scientists say this could be down to obese people being more likely to have health conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure which makes them more vulnerable.

Obesity is defined as having a BMI above 30.

Experts said it was also well known that it hampers the effectiveness of jabs as previous research has suggested the flu vaccine could be half as effective in severely overweight people.

But the study by Italian scientists is believed to be the first time the same link has been found for the coronavirus vaccine.

It has been published as a pre-print on medRxiv, and its methodology and findings have yet to be peer-reviewed by fellow scientists.

According to experts, carrying extra weight can lead to the immune system being constantly inflamed which impairs its functions.

In healthy people it only triggers inflammation when the body is fighting an infection.

An estimated third of adults in England and nearly 40 per cent in the US are classed as obese.

A total of 248 participants were given two doses of the Pfizer vaccine at Istituti Fisioterapici Ospitalieri in Rome before scientists analysed their blood for levels of antibodies seven days after they had their second dose.

On average those who were a normal weight had a high concentration (325.Cool while those who were obese had half this level (167.1).

But the study only included 26 obese people - this is too small to make solid conclusions.

More test are needed as there was no significant difference in results between those who were obese and normal weight.

The study also found no significant difference between the different groups.
