JNI condemns rocket attack on Plateau school
AN alleged attempt by a guest to plant an object suspected to be a bomb in a hotel room in Majekodunmi, off Toyin Street in Ikeja, Lagos yesterday caused panic in the area.
Men of the Nigeria Police Anti Bomb Squad, who stormed the facility and retrieved the object, described the incident as a hoax.
The security operatives arrived at the scene at about 10.20 a.m. with the equipment to detonate the device but later took it to their office for analysis.
A male guest purportedly planted what the police called combustive substance inside a jacket with a timer and left the hotel room.
Soon after his departure, an attendant, who went into the room clean it allegedly discovered the suspected explosive and alerted the management, who promptly informed the police.
Before the police stormed the building, the substance was taken outside the premises.
As the news of the discovering of the subject spread, apprehensive residents hurriedly vacated their homes.
Commissioner of Police (Anti- Bomb Squad), Mr. Folunsho Adebanjo, said it was a bomb scare, describing the incident as a hoax.
He said: “One Akinwunmi Alagbegun from the hotel came to the office to report that an object suspected to be bomb was discovered in one of the hotel rooms. I sent some men there who recovered the object and brought it here for analysis and discovered it to be a hoax. The object comprises an improvised life-jacket, three pieces of red rubber strands, a computer mouse and four pieces of small rectangular polystyrene wrapped in a newspaper with pieces of a carton stapled to the jacket.”
Alagbegun described the unknown guest as a “deranged person” who was out to scare the people.
Meanwhile, the Kogi State government has threatened to sanction property owners and occupants of buildings used for criminal activities.
The Deputy Governor, Yomi Awoniyi, said yesterday in Lokoja that the measure was prompted by the illegal and criminal conversion of residential and commercial buildings to bomb and ammunition factories and shelters for enemies in the state.
Awoniyi therefore appealed to owners of buildings that have been converted from their approved plans to report at the Town Planning and Development Board to update their records.
Four bomb factories have been uncovered by the Joint Task Force (JTF) in various parts of the state between November 2011 and this month, the latest being the factory found in Okaito, a village in Okehi Local Council after the arrest of one of the suspects in the failed bomb attack in Okene area last Sunday.
Also yesterday, the Jama’atul Nasrul Islam (JNI) condemned the rocket attack on an Islamic school in Plateau State, alleging a conspiracy of silence against the attacks on Muslims.
Secretary-General of JNI, Dr. Khalid Abubakar, explained in a statement in Kaduna that the rocket launch on the Muslim community in Bukuru allegedly by irate Christian community has caused his members pain and grief.
He said it was sad that such a thing happened with majority of the media outfits in Nigeria and beyond failing to air it.
