The Airport Company South Africa (ACSA) has confirmed there was an accident Tuesday morning involving an airplane at South Africa’s main O.R. Tambo international airport.

The plane was carrying 120 passengers and seven crew members.

According to the company, the chartered Boeing MD-82 airplane aborted its takeoff after a landing gear caught fire when its tire came off its mount.

A spokeswoman for the ACSA, Unathi Batyashe-Fillis said the Global Aviation Operations Ltd. flight was attempting to leave O.R. Tambo International Airport near Johannesburg when one of its pilots saw the landing gear on fire. The pilot halted the takeoff and stopped the plane on one of the runways at South Africa’s busiest airport, temporarily closing it. The flight’s destination was the southern African nation of Malawi.

The fire was extinguished and no injuries but the accident caused slight delays in flight.

“Each departing flight has had about a five-minute delay,” said Acsa spokesperson Unathi Batyashe-Fillis.

“Delays have been happening from 7.00 this morning until now. One would assume that we are experiencing many delays but we are not.”
