Street beggars and hawkers in Anambra state are in for a shocker, as the state government says it is readying family courts to try them and deliver rapid justice for constituting “nuisance” on the streets.

The state commissioner for women affairs and social development, Henriatta Agbata, said the state was keen about bringing to a close its long struggle with stubborn sellers and alms seekers who rebuff all state entreaties and threats to try alternative livelihoods.

Mrs. Agbata said on Thursday that the setting up of such courts had become imperative to allow those caught in the act be tried and punished accordingly.

“Many of the beggars and street hawkers have been caught in the past and warned to desist from such acts, but after a while, they return to the streets, constituting a nuisance," Mrs. Agbata was quoted by the News Agency of Nigeria as saying.

"Some people are in the habit of bringing children from the villages to live with them and later send such children to hawk for them, instead of enrolling them in schools.

"Such people should understand that the Child Rights Act is in place in Anambra and we have started implementing it," the commissioner said.

Agbata warned that the state government in collaboration with some non-government organizations would beam the search light on the activities of beggars and hawkers and would make them face the law.

IKR. How many jobs have you created to solve the issue?
"but after a while, they return to the streets, " That's cuz when they realized there's still no job for them they go back to the streets to get some money. Ppl have to survive somehow without available jobs. Provide jobs then see how many will wanna continue being a beggar or hawker. mtcheew.

sending them to family court or what ever you call it, will not solve the problem, let there be job creations and all this will go away
