Determined to tackle the challenge of insecurity facing it, the Federal Government said Monday,  that it was committed to the improvement of identity management and trans-border crime control.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim who said this while speaking at the opening of retreat by for the Chairman and members of the National Population Commission, NPC, in Abuja, noted that the Government was committed to improving the quality of population management and its allied maters in Nigeria.
The retreat was organised by the United States Agency for International Development, USAID, and United Nations Population Fund, UNFPA.
Anyim noted that, “if Nigeria must make remarkable progress in her effort to improve the standard of living of the people, it must know her accurate population figure.
According to Anyim, “today, countries are taking more interest in issues relating to their population for multi-sectoral planning. Population and demographic studies and management are necessary for crime control and prevention, infrastructure deployment and maintenance, modern city modelling and urban renewal.
Noting that population data in economic planning cannot be underscored, Senator Anyim who was represented by Mrs. Jamila Shuwara, a Permanent Secretary in the SGF office, added that, effective management of the nation’s population is not just an issue of choice but an absolute necessity.”
He said, “if Nigeria must must make remarkable progress in her effort to improve the standard of living of the people, knowing her population figure should be considered a great asset for present and future development.
“This is, therefore, why the Federal Government is committed to improving the quality of population management and its allied maters in Nigeria, especially in the areas of census, identity and management and trans-border crime control.
“This effort is reflected in the generous attention given to the National Population Commission by the Federal Government through the reconstitution of its board; with astute men and women drawn from private and public sectors to be members.
“The expected reforms that will be brought to bear on the new National Population Commission is one that can generate needed results expected to drive the Transformation Agenda of this administration under President Goodluck Jonathan.
Anyim while commending the organisers of the retreat, said, the commission is taking up the challenge of turning the nation’s population management system to a new phase in order for it to be a veritable asset in the development process.
In his remarks, Chairman of the National Population Commission, NPC, Eze Festus Odimegwu said the present Commission is determined to make a positive difference in population management in the country.
According to him, “it is not just a policy option but an absolute necessity in the quest for enlightened governance. It holds the key to the sustainable resolution of our current challenges and attainment of our national aspirations when integrated with the power of accurate and real time data provision, potency of evidence-based planning and execution of contractual responsibility accounting in delivering the dividends of democracy to all Nigerians.
He noted, “our population policy has traditionally being based on externally articulated platforms that clash with some aspects of our culture and traditional norms.
