TOYOSI OGUNSEYE writes that Nnadebe Henry Abuchi's quest for quick riches made him swallow 50 condom-wrapped pieces of hard drugs, which almost landed him in his grave

Nnadebe Henry Abuchi

He wanted quick money, but he almost got quick death. Nnadebe Henry Abuchi, who is in the

custody of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, is finding it difficult to believe that he is still alive; he narrowly missed death by the whiskers last week.

When his friend approached him to ingest cocaine for importation to the country, little did he know that he was toying with his life.

Abuchi, a trader, did not hesitate to swallow 50 wraps of the poisonous substance. After swallowing one wrap, which was wrapped in a condom and tied with a cello tape, he drank water. That was how he ingested all the wraps of drugs in less than 24 hours.

He reasoned that it would be safer to ingest the drugs rather than carry them in his luggage. How wrong!

During the inward screening of passengers on South Africa Airways flight from Brazil, it was discovered that he had drugs in his stomach. This was discovered with the aid of a scanner at the Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.

Abuchi was then placed under observation so that he could excrete the drugs. That was when his real ordeal began.

If he had thought that it was difficult to ingest the drugs, he later discovered that it was harder to excrete them. He sat for hours in pain while the drugs initially refused to come out.

The head of media, NDLEA, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, told our correspondent that drug couriers go through pain all in the name of money.

He said, "Even the ingestion of drugs is very difficult. They are not allowed to eat until they have delivered the drugs to their destination because food may make them excrete it before they get to where they are going.

"Like Abuchi, who ingested 50 wraps, each of the drugs was wrapped in a condom and tied with a nylon cello tape. The choice of condoms is because they don't easily burst in the stomach. That means that Abuchi swallowed 50 condoms.

"You can imagine what kind of experience it is. And this is what all of them that ingest drugs go through. They all have to swallow condoms and starve themselves until they get to their destination after travelling for a minimum of two days."

The process of excreting the drugs takes a minimum of three days and a maximum of one week, our correspondent gathered.

The suspects are given light food like rice and liquid to drink. In Abuchi's case, he was given orange juice and rice, which he ate for three days before he started going to the toilet.

According to Ofoyeju, sometimes, it is difficult to excrete the drugs depending on the metabolism of the suspect. He said, "Some of them don't respond when we place them under observation and the only thing we can do is to keep giving them light food and water.

"In some cases, the drugs burst in their stomach and they die within a few minutes because the drugs are poisonous. If it leaks, they are as good as dead after 15 minutes, but Abuchi was lucky because just when we thought he wasn't responding to the food, he started excreting the cocaine."

Even after excreting the drugs, picking them from faeces is another dirty job. Abuchi, who lives in South Africa and is married to a South African, was given a potty each time he wanted to excrete and two gloves.

Each time he went to toilet, he had to search his faeces with his hands for the condom-wrapped drugs. The spokesman said no official of the agency could do that for him.

He said, "We only monitor him when he is searching his faeces. He was the one that carried the drugs, so he has to bring them out himself."

One then wonders how much Abuchi, a native of Onitsha, Anambra State, was paid for this discomforting task. "I swallowed 50 wraps of cocaine for a fee of $3,000. I agreed to do it because I needed money. It has happened and I believe I have learnt my lesson," he said.

Three thousand dollars for all that pain! "Some even do it for less," said Ofoyeju. "Some of them however chicken out when they see what their counterparts go through, especially the women.

"They offer to carry the drugs in their luggage and device all types of means to beat security at the airport. On the same day we arrested Abuchi, a female suspect, Ngozi Helen, who is a caterer, was arrested during screening of passengers on British Airways flight to Heathrow, London.

"She cleverly arranged the discs in four sets, drilled a hole in the centre and inserted a pipe in each set, which she filled up with cocaine using two undrilled discs at both ends as a cover to avoid detection.

"Notwithstanding the creative mode she adopted in packing the drugs, our officers still detected it during routine search at the baggage check-in desk."

In her statement, the mother of four said that her sponsors gave her the discs to deliver in London and that it contained 500g of drugs.

She said, "It was my childhood friend that lured me into this mess. I met her at Asaba my home town and she invited me to an eatery. She asked me to eat anything I like; in fact I was carried away by her hospitality particularly because she is a fellow woman.

"My friend told me that she does her business in Abuja where she is based. I demanded she introduce me to her business, but she said it was capital intensive.

"That was how I told her of my husband's death and how I am struggling to take care of my four children. She convinced me to traffic drugs to raise capital for her business with the promise of paying me £3,000.

"Unfortunately, I was caught at the airport by NDLEA. I was astonished when the officer who detected the drugs told me it weighed 2.050kg because my friend told me it was 500g."

The chairman of the NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade, who described the disc concealment as 'novel' said that the seizure was a warning to drug barons.

"Though the stratagem is novel, its detection will surely send a warning signal to drug barons," Giade said.

Ofoyeju said the suspects would be charged to court soon.
