AWKA— NO fewer than 50 students of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Anambra State, belonging to five notorious cult groups in the institution, yesterday denounced their membership and destroyed the instruments with which the groups were identified .

The groups that destroyed what they described as their alters in the presence of the entire students and management of the polytechnic include the Black Beret, the Bukkaneers, the Vickings Confreternity, the Eiye and the Black Axe.

Among instruments surrendered by the cultists were guns and ammunitions, machetes, cloths and candles of different colours and masks.

The ceremony was conducted by Reverend Father Anthony Ezeoke of the institution’s Catholic community, Venerable Ckwudi Osondu of the Anglican community, Evangelist Barth Chukwukadibia and members of the institution’s anti-cult group.

Rector of the Polytechnic, Professor Godwin Onu, said the exercise was part of the on-going cleansing in the institution and commended the efforts of the clergy in the polytechnic in convincing the cultists to renounce their membership of the cult groups.

He said: “ It is our commitment to make this institution cult free. I have said it that anybody who chooses to remain in associations banned in the polytechnic is taking a very big risk because there is nothing to gain from belonging to these groups, as what usually results from them is death.

“We will continue to advise the students who are still bent on joining these groups that it is in their best interest to come out now as we are assuring them that no punishment would be meted out to them. Besides, there is nothing like freedom.”

He, however, warned those who have not renounced that authorities of the polytechnic already had their names and photographs and would take necessary action in due course.
