Investigations by our correspondent at the scene of the accident in the Ijaiye area of the town revealed that the accident occured at about 10.00am when the truck driver was negotiating his way into Oando Petrol Station.
One of the eye witnesses, Mr. Abayomi Ogundele, said the truck was moving into the station, located in a hilly area, when its brake suddenly failed and the driver lost control.
“Following the development, many people ran helter-skelter for safety, motorists abandoned their cars for safety,” Ogundele stated.
The 10 vehicles crushed were some of those abandoned by the fleeing motorists. The driver of the truck took to his heels to forestall attack by victims.
Head of Rescue of the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corp of FRSC, Taiwo Samson, who led his team to the scene, said, “We got a telephone call, and had to race down here, it was on getting here we discovered the havoc the truck had caused; but luckily, nobody was killed in the accident. The motorists sensing the danger were said to have jumped out from their vehicles before the truck could get to them”.
Samson said, at the time of this report, that efforts were on by the agency to tow the affected vehicles, and to offload the fuel from the truck. At the scene, men of the fire services were on standby, while the road was condoned off.
