National Vice-Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Olisa Metuh, on Sunday said the party had turned a new leaf and would prefer to lose than rig an election or impose an unpopular candidate on the electorate.

“This is a new PDP. We are now law-abiding. I would rather that the PDP loses than to rig the election or foist an unpopular candidate on the people,” Metuh told journalists in Akwa, Anambra State.

Metuh, who was in Anambra for the conduct of ward congresses of the party in the state, said the PDP had imbibed the gospel of internal democracy.

The PDP chieftain, who said he was impressed by the general conduct of party members in the congresses, said the days were long gone when one man or a family held the party hostage in Anambra State.

“For the first time, it is a free and fair election. I commend Anambra people for coming out and acting responsibly and being loyal to PDP. We thank God for it and we are happy,” Metuh said while appraising the peaceful conduct of PDP congresses in Anambra.

He said the party would win 18 out of the 21 local government areas in the forthcoming local government elections.

He said the postponement of the election by the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission was an advantage to PDP, which he said was using the opportunity of the shift to put its house in order.

On the call by the Benji Udeozor-led state executive committee that the congresses were illegal, Metuh said he would not dignify people he said were bent on destroying the party in Anambra State with a response.

He explained that the congresses were ordered by the National Working Committee of the party.

He said PDP lawyers had filed an appeal against the judgment obtained by the Udeozor committee and were working to get a stay of execution of the judgment.
