Youths from the hometown of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, under the aegis of the Ibeku Youth Council (IYC), have called on the federal government of Nigeria to tread with caution in the treasonable felony charges preferred against Kanu.

The group warned that Nnamdi Kanu must not die in custody, insisting that the government must adhere strictly with the rule of law in the prosecution of the treason case against the secessionist leader.

The youth organization also called on Kenyan government to unconditionally release the British passports belonging to the IPOB Leader, and decried the unlawful and inhuman treatments meted to Kanu by Kenyan security agents before his subsequent repatriation to Nigeria.
It was gathered that the IPOB Leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu who hails from Isiama Afaraukwu Ibeku clan in Umuahia North local government area of the state was rearrested and repatriated from Kenya in a combined operation between the Nigeria government and foreign

In a statement jointly signed by its President, Chinedu Emeruwa and Publicity Secretary, Comrade Samuel Aguiyi and issued to journalists, in Umuahia, on Monday, the Ibeku Youth Council (IYC), noted that Nnamdi Kanu-led Indigenous People of Biafra Assembly have maintained non violent posture in its agitation for separatism due to obvious marginalization of the Igbo nation in the current Nigeria democratic administration, vowing not to accept any decision contrary to the constitution of the land in the continuation of Kanu’s trial.

The IYC frowned at the ongoing brutality being unleashed against Kanu in the custody of the Department of State Service (DSS), reminding the Nigeria government that her approach towards Kanu was infringement on the latter’s rights as it insisted that IPOB had never carried out killings likewise the Boko Haram terrorist, herdsmen and bandits that have sent many innocent citizens of Nigeria to their graves through their heinous attacks.
The socio-cultural body called on President Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government to apply the same wands it used in the rearrest of Nnamdi Kanu to fight terrorists and killer herdsmen who have been causing havoc in the north and southeast regions.

The IYC however advised the federal government to reach out to the agitators for a genuine dialogue in order to address the fundamental issues that necessitated the tension in the country.

According to the Ibeku Youth Council, “Kanu’s is just exercising his rights as guaranteed by the law of the land. We maintain our position that the rule of law must be followed in this matter, anything short of this, we will invoke the gods of our land to let justice prevail. Because, we will no longer continue to watch maltreatment and humiliation of our kinsman whose only crime is his agitations for succession for the people”.

In the meantime, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has inaugurated a legal team to monitor the court proceedings in the ongoing trial of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

This was contained in a communique made available to journalists in Enugu on Sunday by National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chiedozie Alex Ogbonnia, which he said, was the decision reached at the end of its executive meeting held over the weekend.

He said: “At the meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, held on Saturday, July 10, 2021, in Enugu, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has observed with keen interest the recent re-arraignment and consequent trial of our son, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu;

“In as much as Ohanaeze Ndigbo is not averse to the trial of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, we, however, submit that he should be tried within the ambit of the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and in line with global best practices;

“That as part of our avowed determination to ensure the fair trial of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, we have constituted a legal team led by the National Legal Adviser of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide and eminent Igbo Leaders to monitor the legal proceedings, throughout the trial”.
