Nigerian rapper, singer-songwriter, and social activist, Michael Ugochukwu Stephens, popularly known as Ruggedman has revealed why many Nigerian youths will continue to take the government less seriously.

According to him, youths will take reality shows like Big Brother Naija seriously because they have more to offer than the Nigerian government.

Ruggedman in an interview with Punch, further said the government is still in denial about the killings and shooting of peaceful protesters at Lekki Tollgate, Lagos State in October 2020.

“I think the only reason the Nigerian youths are so serious about BBN is because of the transparency. It is also because of the fact that they know their votes count. They also know that at the end of the day, the organisers fulfil their promises. That is why people are so serious about it,” he said.

Quote
“Can you say that about the Nigerian government? So that is why I said the Nigerian government has a lot to prove to the people, to show transparency, to show competence, to live up to expectations and also fulfil the promises they made. The Nigerian government needs to earn the trust of the people, especially the youths.

“Till today we are still trying to find out who shot at the protesters at the toll gate in 2020. A year after the incident, we still have not heard anything about it.

“There are so many things the government needs to come through with first before the youths will trust them,”
he added.

Ruggedman started exploring music in 1999.

He produced his own songs and released two tracks in 1999, both of which were well-played on the radio.

In 1999, Ruggedman launched himself into the music industry, eventually becoming the most featured rapper in Nigeria.

His albums were all released on his personal label, Rugged Records.

He has performed worldwide alongside international acts such as Sean Paul, Wyclef Jean, Akon, Maxi Priest, Kanye West, LL Cool J, T-Pain, and Nas.
