The former Commissioner for Planning and Economic Development in Kwara State, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, on Monday emerged the Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate in the state.

Also, a former Executive Director of Afribank, Mr. Issa Jibrin, defeated other contestants in the primary election in Kogi to emerge the PDP’s candidate in the state.

The Kwara election which started late Sunday at the Baseball stadium, Dr. Olusola Saraki Way, Adewole Estate, lasted till about 3.30am on Monday.

Ahmed polled 695 votes to defeat his closest rival, Bashir Bolarinwa, who polled 39 votes and Yekini Alabi who came third with nine votes.

In his acceptance speech after the election which was conducted by the leader of the PDP electoral panel, Mr. Musa Adar of the Federal House of Representatives, Ahmed thanked the leadership of the party in the state for reposing confidence in him.

While describing the victory as a collective one, Ahmed solicited the support and co-operation of other contestants and members of the party.

In his address, Governor Bukola Saraki called on all the aspirants in the party to close ranks, work for the unity and cohesion of the party in order to achieve success at the forthcoming polls.

In Kogi, the primary election which began around 9pm on Sunday was concluded at about 1.30am Monday at the township stadium, Lokoja. The governorship candidate scored 361 votes to beat other 18 contestants.

Senator Nicholas Ugbane, Yakubu Mohammed, a journalist and the Speaker of the state house of assembly, Mr. Clarence Olafemi, had earlier stepped down from the race.

While Ugbane attributed his action to what he described as “undue meddlesomeness,” Mohammed gave “political exigency” as his reason.

The speaker, it was also gathered, stepped down after getting assurances that he would be the running mate to Jibrin.

Jibrin described his emergence as the will of God and submitted that in the race there was ‘no victor, no vanquish.’

In his reaction, a former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Chief Bayo Ojo, blamed his loss on “money politics and the incumbency factor.”

“We came into the race as a change agent and even though party politics has robbed the state of an innovative service delivery package.

“But we are confident that we have sown a seed of revolutionary change through the message of hope we preached throughout the state during the campaign,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr. Isiaka Gold, Kwara Central, Sha’ba Lafiaji, North and Simeon Ajibola, South, have emerged the PDP’s senatorial candidates in Kwara State.
