The Ondo State Police Command has apprehended a 39-year-old man, Dolapo Babalola, for the alleged murder of his childhood friend, Evangelist Opeyemi Oyelakin, aged 34. Babalola reportedly confessed to the crime, revealing that he and an accomplice, Sikiru Mutiu, lured the victim to a remote area in Ondo town under the guise of inspecting a piece of land.
According to police reports, on March 15, 2024, Babalola and Mutiu attacked Oyelakin, with Babalola striking him repeatedly with a stick and stone until he succumbed to his injuries. The suspects then disposed of the deceased's body in a shallow pit and fled the scene with his motorcycle, which they later sold in Ibadan for N130,000.
The arrest came after the victim's family raised the alarm over his sudden disappearance, prompting detectives to launch an investigation. Babalola was tracked down to his residence in Ondo town, where he was taken into custody.
In a remorseful statement, Babalola expressed regret for his actions, attributing the crime to the influence of the devil. He admitted to having stolen motorcycles in the past but claimed that Oyelakin's murder was the first of its kind.
The Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, Abayomi Oladipo, led the operation to recover the victim's body from the pit where it was concealed. Oladipo warned the public, particularly motorcycle riders, to exercise caution when transporting passengers to isolated areas, emphasizing the need for vigilance in reporting suspicious activities.
Efforts are underway to apprehend Babalola's accomplice, and the police are urging anyone with information to come forward. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of community vigilance in preventing and combating crime.
