Namtira Bwala, a student of Lead British International School, Abuja, has taken legal action against the institution, accusing it of negligence in providing a secure learning environment. The lawsuit was filed on May 9, 2024, at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, by her attorney, Marvin Omorogbe, Esq., of Deji Adeyanju and Partners.
The civil suit, identified as FCT/HC/CV/2341/24: Miss Namtira Bwala Vs Lead British International School Ltd, was initiated with a Writ of Summons. Bwala is demanding a public apology to be published in two national newspapers and is seeking N500 million in general damages.
In her legal claim, Bwala asserts that the school owed her a duty of care to protect her from physical or emotional harm and privacy breaches while under its supervision. The claim further details the school’s alleged failures, which include not preventing the bullying that Bwala endured, not informing her parents of the incidents promptly, and delaying an investigation until after the incident had already gone viral on social media.
The suit seeks judicial declarations recognizing the school’s failures as negligent, highlighting a lack of immediate and appropriate response to the torment and trauma Bwala suffered while under the school's care.
The case has drawn attention to the responsibilities of educational institutions in safeguarding their students and the legal implications of failing to do so. The court proceedings are keenly awaited by the public and could set a significant precedent regarding school accountability in Nigeria.
