In a dramatic turn of events, an armed robbery suspect known by the nickname Bob Jay met his end after falling into an open well following a raid on a student hostel at the University of Cross River State (Unicross), Okuku campus, on Friday night.
According to Regina, a student at Unicross, the robbers attacked the hostel around midnight, stealing laptops, phones, and money from the students. During the chaotic escape, one of the robbers, later identified as Bob Jay, fell into an uncovered well used by students for bathing and washing clothes.
“They were many that came around 12 midnight. They robbed all the students in the Okuku hostel. They stabbed one student, broke the head of another with a stick before escaping with phones, laptops and other valuables,” Regina told Vanguard over the phone.
The discovery of Bob Jay’s body was made the following morning when students went to fetch water and noticed a man inside the well. Alarmed, they called the local community, who retrieved the body and identified him as one of the robbers. Reports indicated that Bob Jay was from Mbube, a neighboring village.
“The well was used by students to fetch water to bathe and wash clothes and has no cover,” Regina explained.
The police were promptly alerted and arrived to take the body away. As of now, no other gang members have been identified. Regina mentioned that the phone recovered from Bob Jay's pocket was too damaged to provide clear information about his accomplices.
