Pa Ayo Adebanjo, a prominent figure within the pan-Yoruba socio-political organization Afenifere, has raised concerns about the failure of President Bola Tinubu and his fellow governors in the South West to demand a people-centric constitution when Nigeria transitioned to democracy in 1999.

During an interview on Inside Sources with Laolu Akande, broadcasted on Channels Television, Adebanjo expressed regret that Tinubu and his contemporaries missed an opportunity to push for a Sovereign National Conference at the inception of the Fourth Republic.

Reflecting on the period following the return to democracy, Adebanjo asserted that the then-military Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar, presented a chance for Nigeria to chart a new course with a constitution that truly reflected the aspirations of its citizens. However, he lamented that Tinubu and others "chickened out" from demanding such a conference.

Adebanjo emphasized the need for a constitution crafted by the people themselves rather than one imposed by the military. He underscored that such a constitution would address critical issues facing the country, particularly the pervasive insecurity.

The elder statesman recalled the stand taken by Afenifere during that period, highlighting their insistence on a Sovereign National Conference and federalism. He criticized the South-West governors for not standing firm on these principles.

He recounted how Afenifere contested the 1999 election under protest, demanding a constitutional overhaul. Despite assurances, Adebanjo expressed disappointment that the governors, including Tinubu, succumbed to the allure of power and failed to push for the desired constitutional changes.

Adebanjo urged Tinubu, now presented with an opportunity to rewrite history, to champion constitutional reforms using available frameworks such as the 2014 National Conference Report and recommendations from various quarters.

He concluded by reiterating the importance of a people-centered constitution and called for concerted efforts to realize this vision for a better Nigeria.
