In their interim manager, this Chelsea side have a man who knows the club and knows the team, they feel comfortable with this man, but ultimately they play for themselves, not Di Matteo. Now playing with the shackles well and truly off, Chelsea find themselves in a Champions League semi-final, and FA Cup final and only two points off Tottenham who sit fourth in the league. Not bad going for a club in crisis.
Just think about that for a minute. Chelsea, a side so gleefully written off by pundits and fans alike (they aren’t the most likeable club after all) are in contention to be thought of as one of the strongest teams in Europe. This could be their year, as Liverpool showed in 2005, a good run in the Champions League can often mean making sacrifices on the domestic front. Though you would have to call Chelsea as favourites in the FA Cup final with Liverpool too. John Terry could yet lift silverware this season, despite the ‘disastrous’ season he has had.
Defeat at the hands of City in March has been a springboard for Chelsea’s form in all competitions, which since then, has looked like this:
Draw
Win
Win
Win
Win
Draw
Win
With the way this Chelsea side are motivated by glory, in the Champions League in particular, you cannot imagine this run of form waning. Three wins away from being European champions, the likes of Drogba, Lampard and Terry must smell blood.
One or two things stand in their way of course. Barcelona being one of them, a Barcelona team that many would have thought (at the start of the season) who destroy the high line of Chelsea. However, now they have settled I cannot see Chelsea giving Barcelona anything easily. This could be the season that Chelsea picked themselves up, dusted themselves down and went all the way. All on their own.
