At least four people were said to have been killed on Friday in Nnewi, Anambra State, when traders and youths of Nnewi clashed with members of the Anambra State Task Force on Street Trading, otherwise known as Mpiawa Azu.
The victims were said to have been shot and cut with machetes as the fight escalated.
In the chaos that greeted the clash, some traders closed shop and fled, while some misguided youths went on a looting spree.
Sources said troubled started when the Mpiawa Azu men came in from their base in Onitsha, some 20 kilometres away, to collect money from truck operators and other traders in Nnewi, but were resisted by some youths from Uruagu Nnewi.
The Mpiawa Azu men retreated and headed back to Onitsha for reinforcement. They returned with heavily-armed men in seven buses to execute their mission.
But the Uruagu youths further resisted them, which led to a violent clash involving the use of firearms and other weapons.
By the time the clash ended, four people had been felled, while the Mpiawa Azu men returned to Onitsha.
The police have since taken over the streets of Nnewi, while the Nkwo Market and other adjoining businesses have been shut.
The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Emeka Chukwuemeka, who confirmed the incident, however said he would call our correspondent back to give further police details of the situation.
