THE Niger State police command has dragged before the chief magistrates’ court 6, Minna, three armed squad of the state command of the Nigeria Prisons Service (NPS), over allegations of criminal conspiracy, aiding and abetting the escape of five suspected robbery suspects in their custody.
The accused were Ahmed Bello Kagara and Mohammed Bello Abdu-lahi, staffers of the armed squad of NPS attached to the Old Prisons, Minna and Idris Isah, said to be a prison warder and was allegedly on duty at the court on April 10.
The prison staffers were said to have illegally produced five robbery suspects, who were awaiting trial at the court, even without the instruction of the court.
The five fleeing robbery suspects were identified as Peter Okpara; Yusuf Adamu (a.k.a Dan); Lamir Usman (a.k.a Dan Zam-fara); Abdulmalik Mohamwmed (a.k.a Uba) and one Muas Yusuf, all standing trial at the court and remanded in prison custody for criminal conspiracy and robbery.
A press statement signed by the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Richard Ogu-che, said on the fateful day, at about 10.00 a.m, the accused had, without the instruction of the court, deliberately produced the fleeing five awaiting trials robbery suspects, while they also deliberately abandoned the suspects in the open court premises.
According to Oguche, when the robbery suspects discovered that the prison warder on duty had left the court premises, they beat up the police prosecutor in the court and escaped.
He assured that efforts were in top gear by the state police command to re-arrest the fleeing suspects.
