Taylor was found guilty by the international tribunal to have, as the President of Liberia (1997-2003) supported the civil war in neighboring Sierra Leone's rebel Revolutionary United Front in order to enrich themselves. That Taylor had played a "significant role" in the crimes committed by the rebels. And that during the eleven-year civil war in Sierra Leone between 1991 and 2002 about 120,000 people were killed.
Taylor had to flee in 2003 after a rebellion from Liberia. He was arrested in 2006 while in exile in Nigeria. For security laxity reasons in Nigeria, the trial was moved to the Netherlands. He was found guilty of the eleven counts charges in which Taylor was involved and convicted, including murder, rape and pillage.
