Sources said a female student of the institution was allegedly having problems with her boyfriend in the school and reported the matter to her soldier-friend who forced his way into the college and killed the boy, despite pleadings by other students.
The soldier was alleged to have fatally wounded two other students in the process. It led to thousands of students demonstrating along the major streets. The students later barricaded the main gate of Gombe Government House.
For about two hours, the road leading to the Government House was closed by the students who demanded to see Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo to register their anger.
Throughout the duration of the protest, motorists and other road users were prevented from passing through the road.
Provost of the College, Dr. Adamu Abass, however said: “One student is dead while the other two are hospitalised at Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Gombe. I cannot tell you the exact number of victims because I have not been there to see them.
“What happened was that some students were shot dead, and others went wild. All efforts to calm them down proved abortive. Therefore, I had to go with them to the government House to see the governor. Meanwhile, I had requested that we go and see the Commissioner of Police. They refused, saying they do not want to see any one except the governor.
“So I had to go with them to the Government House, but unfortunately, he (governor) was not around.”
