A man, who allegdly tried to rob a car dealer in Ikoyi area of Lagos, has met his waterloo.
The suspect, Mr. Hillary Ilozeowu, allegedly posed as a customer and told the dealer, Mr. Iranola Awosika, he wanted test run a Toyota Sienna car.
It was learnt that when Ilozeowu entered into the vehicle with the dealer, he pulled out a gun and ordered him (the dealer) to bend down.
Awosika told PUNCH Metro that he did not suspect that Ilozeowu was a robber as he was well dressed and was chauffeur-driven.
Awosika said, “On May 8, 2012, I was by my shop at Osborne Road when Ilozeowu came in a Volkswagen Golf and said he wanted to buy one of my vehicles. He was well dressed, holding an expensive phone and was even chauffeur-driven so I felt he was a man of means.
“He said he was interested in buying a Toyota Sienna 2000 series but said he wanted to be sure that the car was in good condition and asked if he could test run it.
“I had no suspicion and since the Volkswagen car he came in was parked in my shop, I felt there was no problem at all. I entered the Toyota and we drove just about 200 metres when I asked him to turn back to the shop. I was however shocked when he brought out a gun.”
The car dealer said the suspect threatened to kill him if he did not heed his demands.
Awosika told our correspondent that Ilozeowu began driving towards Third Mainland Bridge but when they got to Dolphin Estate area, he decided to engage the suspect in a struggle.
He said, “Ilozeowu told me to bury my head between my thighs but I opened my eyes and when I realised that he wasn’t looking, I wrestled the gun away from him, throwing it out of the vehicle
“By this time, we were already at the Adeniji-Adele interchange on Third Mainland Bridge. We continued to struggle until the vehicle hit the railings on the bridge, almost plunging into the water.”
PUNCH Metro learnt that when the suspect, who was injured, immediately exited the car and started running, Awosika raised the alarm.
It was gathered that due to the alarm, some youths at the Adeniji-Adele Bus Stop chased the suspect, caught him and gave him the beating of his life.
It was further learnt that after being beaten, Ilozeowu was allegedly handed over to Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad where he allegedly confessed that he was a robber but denied he was armed.
Police investigations also revealed that the Golf car which the suspect had brought to the car dealer’s shop was a chartered vehicle and the driver had left after waiting for the suspect to return.
The Police Public Relations Officer for the command, Mr. Lekan Ogundare, said this during an interview with our correspondent following the arrest of Ilozeowu.
Ogundare said, “Such cases have become rampant in recent times and members of the public, especially, dealers need to be very careful when transacting business with strangers.
“The suspect is helping with investigations. He said he only wanted to steal the vehicle, adding that he wasn’t armed. Policemen have visited the area where the crime occurred but no gun has been found.”
