The celebrated World Environment Day was established in 1972 by the United Nations to address concerns about the human environment.
In a bid to increase awareness and promote participatory engagement towards a healthy sustainable environment, some schools in the company of some Ghanaian beauty queens have planted trees to mark the 2012 World Environment Day celebrations in the Tema Metropolis.
Robert Amiteye, who is the project coordinator of the Environmental Health Club, indicated that promoting the rights and responsibilities of the citizenry toward environmentally responsible actions was the key to the celebrations.
Lamisi Sam Awinongya, Ghana’s 1st runner-up 2009 and Matilda Adjoa Densu, representative for Eastern Region 2011 both of Ghana`s Most Beautiful fame, engaged the participating groups in a health walk to create awareness on improved environmental sanitation.
They planted some trees to mark the occasion. They appealed to the participants to exhibit environmentally friendly behaviours and asked them to share the knowledge with friends and family.
The Environmental Health Officer for the Tema Metropolitan Assembly, Edward Shardey, and Apostle Samuel Sowah were the guests.
The theme for this year’s world environment day was `Green Economy, Does It Include You?
In a speech delivered by Edward Shardey, he said citizens should know the importance of public participation in environmental issues and urged them not to rely only on governmental agencies.
Trees were planted in the names of James Mensah, Headmaster of St. Paul Methodist School, Francis Yankey, Daniel Amankwah Quaye, Proprietor of Bexhill International Complex and Ephraim Wuaku. Nestlé provided Milo drink to refresh the participants.
The health post team included professional nurses from the Tema General Hospital- Victoria Anawoe, Samuel Naryo and Monica Ewusi.
The celebration was organized by the Environmental Health Club in collaboration with Deks Educational Institute.
