The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has raised the alarm over fraudulent text messages sent to candidates contesting in the July 14 governorship election in the state in the name of the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Kassim Gaidam and other INEC staff with the intent to “defraud unsuspecting members of the public, especially politicians.”
A press release signed by Edo INEC public Relations Officer, Mrs. Sule Imodu and made available to P.M.NEWS on Monday said the messages were sent on the following GSM numbers, 08154316696 and 08026862268.
The press statement gave an example of such fraudulent text messages: “Andrew, pls I am at Sokoto state for REC’s workshop, and I am coming back to Edo tomorrow. Some of my staffs are at Obudu cattle ranch for retreat, pls help me and send N300,000 to them. See me by Thursday at Benin. All the best, Account no. Dr. Agha Vincent O. 1203010290098. First Bank. Kassim Gaidam REC.”
While warning members of the public to discountenance such dubious text messages, the statement added that members of the public, “especially desperate candidates, political parties/politicians are particularly reminded that the Resident Electoral Commissioner’s GSM number is the one earlier given to them.
