The chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Eze Festus Odimegwu has said that the Nigerian Maternal mortality ratio was 545 per 100,000 live births.

He made the disclosure at the press conference in commemoration of the 2012 World Population Day.

The NPC boss added that the figures give a grim picture of the health status of the reproductive women, aged  between 15 and 49.According to him, ‘’it indicates a multiplier effect of segxwal and cultural behaviour on the health status of our women’’.

He  explained that early marriage and age at first intercourse had implications for total fertility rate which was at 5.7 percent and was undesirably high.

‘’Maternal morbidity and mortality rate are most commonly associated with high risk pregnancies and births and these includes too early pregnancies and birth by mothers under 18 years, too many or more than four previous births and too late pregnancies after the age of 35 years,’’ he said.

He  disclosed that the foundation for providing universal access to reproductive health services had already been laid in the new National Policy on Population for Sustainable Development.
