Mallam Uba Abdulsalam, 80-year-old, who married Hajiya Amina Usman, a 70-year-old, was among the 250 couples who were married in a mass wedding organised by the Kano State government on Sunday.

Speaking on the occasion, the state governor, Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso called on all stakeholders in the state to come together and find a lasting solution to the incessant cases of divorce in the state.

Each of the new 250 couples smiled home with different items provided by the state government, which included a gallon of groundnut oil, three crates of eggs, a complete set of bed, a carton of spaghetti, a sewing machine, as well as N20,000 as capital to start a business, so as to be self-reliant.

The 80-year-old groom, who walked majestically in the company of his bride to collect materials given to them, said he was happy to have married his new wife, Amina, saying, a comfortable companion has been given to him by Allah.

However, all the 250 couples, who were gorgeously dressed, were full of joy, as according to them, at last, “Allah has provided us our better halves after years of either divorce from former spouses or death of former lovers.”

Governor Kwankwaso, while speaking at the Government House during the distribution of cash to 250 couples, who got wedded under the state government-sponsored Zawarawa Marriage Scheme, implored the new couples to always live up to their matrimonial responsibilities, so as to ensure sustainable families.
