Delta State Government on Wednesday shut down Lucy Guest House, Asaba, for allegedly harbouring suspected kidnappers.

The announcement came after the State Security Council meeting. The government alleged that the hotel had become a hideout for criminals.

Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Ovuozuorie Macaulay, who spoke with journalists after the meeting, said the action was part of the efforts to curb kidnapping in the state.

The government also threatened to arrest and prosecute landlords who harbour suspected kidnappers and seize relatives of the suspects until they show up.

Macaulay said, “The Security Council has directed that henceforth, landlords, relatives and family members of kidnap suspects and criminals on the run will be arrested. This will make them give information to security agencies to aid them in arresting the suspect.”

He also said the council ordered the closure of the hotel he described as a “kidnap den” because it had been confirmed that it was being used by criminals.

Meanwhile, the state government has condemned the alleged dethronement of the Obi of Abavo, Obi Irenume 1 and the subsequent installation of a new king.

Macaulay described the action as “ultra-vires, obnoxious and of no effect”, since the recognised Obi is still alive.

He said, “Anybody crowned by the indigenes of a community and given a staff of office by the government is the accepted king. Nobody has the right to remove such a king except through the court of law.”

He warned troublemakers in the area the state government was ready to deal with those creating “disorder and insecurity”.

Already, the government has deployed security officials in the town to maintain of law and order.
