Federal Government Announces Plans to Reintroduce Toll Gates on ALL Federal Road

The Chairman of the Federal Road Maintenance Agency, Ezekiel Adeniji, has said that the Federal Government will soon reintroduce tollgates to federal roads across the country.

Tollgates were scrapped by former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo during his tenure. However, since his exit in 2007, there has been reports that the government was considering the return of tollgates to federal roads. This is likely especially as some states like Lagos have successfully introduced such on their roads.

The FERMA boss also said the agency would recruit 10,000 Nigerians from communities where it would be engaged in major road maintenance work before the end of the year.

In an interview with Economic Confidential, Adeniji did not give a specific date for the reintroduction of tollgates, but he said that tolling is for revenue generation and job creation.

“In developed countries, there is no place you go to that you don’t pay toll for the roads you use.

“If you are paying for water, electricity and communication, why can’t you pay for good roads? Tolling is universal. But the government that scrapped the tolling knows the reason why they scrapped it, and we also have reasons why we want to return it. It is as simple as that.

“Because when you toll, you get more revenue, you create more jobs and you have funds to maintain the roads.”

It is good to reintroduce toll on our road as you revered to other countries but what is your plan so far fight corruption like other countries? if you can not fight  corruption in our nation please don't try to reintroduce tollgate.

The problem is ; "how do we even determine in a fuel
 subsidy regime how much "road tax" is? especially when no
 govt agency can accurately come up with a data of how
 much PMS is actually consumed ? DPR/NNPC/PPPRA have
 different figures each & every time..
I asked a question which you side stepped, " What has
 Ferma been able to achieve within the last 10 years? I can
 tell you for free- as as frequent road traveler -that the roads
 fell into complete disrepair after the removal of toll gates....
As for the other point about Toll, you only pricked
Europe and left the US (I've been in a ride with someone
 in a big city and my "chauffeur" decided to take an
 alternative route to avoid paying the couple of dollars
 cos it wasn't rush hour) I can't claim to have traveled all
 the schengen roads in Europe but been in one country
 and witnessed a tolling situation of regular road
 users.....
I'm not emotional, I'm a realist, we can't compare our ways
 to the west's miles apart. i'll rather pay 500 naira fro Lagos
 to Akure than risk having a burst tire cos of a bad portion no
 one will take responsibility for!! Nigeria is a peculiar place!!
