IT was a major loss yesterday for members of the Task Force on the Protection of Oil Pipelines in Delta State as its head, Captain Romeo Itima, was killed by criminal groups engaged in illegal oil activities in the state.

It was learnt that the operational boat conveying Itima and other members of the task force came under heavy gunfire in the Escravos area by oil thieves.

The boat allegedly ran into rocks at Escravos Bar in a bid to escape and capsized, throwing all occupants into the waters.

Itima hailed from Oporoza, Escravos area of the state.

In a statement yesterday, the family confirmed the death of Itima.

His death occurred during an operation against theft of crude and criminal sea-robbery activities around the Warri pilotage district.
