THE Police are on the trail of over 10 gunmen that shot the Chairman, Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Anambra State chapter of the Motorcycle Transport Union of Nigeria (MTUN), Chief Jimmy Okonkwo.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Ekwulobia Police Division, Mr. Sunday Adama, said the police were waiting for the recovery of Okonkwo to help arrest the attackers, who he said he could identify.
Okonkwo, who escaped death by the whiskers, was shot after making withdrawal from one of the new generation banks in Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Council.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers waylaid the BoT chairman with two of their buses and attempted to force him into their vehicle in the full glare of passersby.
Okonkwo reportedly resisted the move, making his assailants descended on him with dangerous weapons like battle axes and machete after smashing the windscreen of his vehicle.
They were said to have failed to gain access to the N3 million Okonkwo reportedly withdrew but made away with N600, 000 they found in his car.
The victim, who spoke with newsmen on his hospital bed, identified the gunmen as the same ones that attacked him about three months ago at Oba Junction in Idemili South Council Area.
According to him: “my life and personal safety is under severe threat and I can identify those that attacked me.
“Their mission was to eliminate me and take over the affairs of the union.
“One of them is wanted for murder case and I wonder why the Police allowed him to be walking the streets free”.
