Niger State Governor, Dr Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, has raised an alarm that his e-mail account has been hacked into by unauthorised elements soliciting assistance.

LEADERSHIP gathered that the scam mail was received by people in his contact last Thursday, and  the governor got to know about it when some of them contacted him over the weekend.

Aliyu’s outcry was contained in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Danladi Ndayebo, yesterday in which he alerted the public about the discovery that the Governor’s e-mail account has been   hacked into by unknown persons who used it to send messages to many of his contacts seeking financial assistance from them.

The message by the hackers to Governor Aliyu’s contacts was: “Urgent assistance: I didn’t tell you about our travel to Spain for a short vacation, but unfortunately we were robbed at the hotel where we lodged along with other folks. We didn’t bring our phones here and the hotel telephone lines were disconnected during the incident. So I have access to only e-mail.

“Please I’m going to need some sort of loan from you for us to relocate to another hotel close to the embassy and also to get us another flight ticket...Please, let me know if you can help us out. I’m looking forward to hearing from you”.

In the statement, Governor Aliyu described the hackers as unscrupulous, emphasizing that he neither sent nor authorized anyone to send out such messages on his behalf.

He therefore asked all those who have received the ludicrous solicitation to ignore it, while thanking well meaning Nigerians who brought the issue to his attention.

The identity of the hackers or their mission was not yet known at the time of this report, but it was gathered that security agents were on top of the situation to unearth those behind the act.
