WARRI—A 17-year-old son of an official of Chevron Nigeria Limited, CNL, and five other members of a kidnap/armed robbery gang have been arrested by soldiers of the 3rd Battalion, Nigerian Army, Effurun, near Warri, Delta State, for alleged car snatching.
Commanding Officer of the Battalion, Lt-Col Ifeanyi Otu, who paraded the suspects before reporters, yesterday, said soldiers seized the suspects in Warri and Benin where they allegedly carried out their operations.
He said their modus operandi was to kidnap people for ransom and snatch cars in Warri, which they sell to a Kaduna-based buyer through his front men in Benin.
The six suspects are aged between 17 and 27. The Chevron staff was said to have disowned his son before now because of his wicked ways.
Otu said luck ran out on the gangsters when a victim reported, last week, how his Honda Accord car was snatched on Sunday and soldiers of the battalion at a checkpoint intercepted the vehicle, while the bandits were driving it to Benin.
One of the suspects, who simply gave his name as Tare, 17 years, in his confession, said they used wood to obstruct road and rob unsuspected victims of their vehicles at gunpoint.
