UNKNOWN gunmen in the early hours of Tuesday reportedly attacked and set fire on two communities – Dak and Attakar – in Ganawuri district of Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.

Among the dead was a police corporal serving with the Plateau State Police Command. He was said to have been shot dead by the gunmen.

NE learnt that the policeman, identified as Corporal Jibril, was on a patrol alongside his other colleagues to the crisis area of Ganawuri village when the gunmen struck.

A source, who spoke to our correspondent but craved anonymity, said the two communities were completely sacked and the entire houses razed down.

Confirming the incidence, the member representing Riyom Constituency in the state House of Assembly, Mr. Daniel Dem, told our correspondent that dozens of persons were feared killed but that he was yet to ascertain the figure.

The lawmaker who described the attack as sad, said both villages had been under siege by suspected Fulani militia since last week.

Dem also accused members of the Special Task Force deployed in the area to restore law and order of complicity in the attack.

He said, “My people are been killed every day and yet the STF is not doing anything about it. I am calling for the withdrawal of the STF since they are not capable of handling the crisis that has been rocking the state for a long time.”

Plateau State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Chris Olakpe, who confirmed the incident, said the killed officer was shot while on a peace mission to the area

He said no arrest had been made but that his men were carrying out investigation into the matter.

Meanwhile, Commander of the Special Task Force on Jos crisis, Maj. Gen. Henry Ayoola, has said it is only the supplication to God by widows and victims that can solve the spate of insurgency in the state.

Ayoola spoke at a one day intercessory prayer and fasting session for widows in Plateau state organised by the Christian Association of Nigeria in Jos on Tuesday.

The STF commander was one of the people participating in the fasting and prayer session for the widows.

“Why I am joining in the prayers is because I know that God answers prayers of the widows and the oppressed in the society and when a widow cries to God for any injustice done to her, God will certainly intervene, for widows occupy a special place according to Biblical injunctions, so they have favour from God,” he said.
