Illegal refinery operators in the Niger Delta have demanded amnesty as a condition to end the illicit activities. Their demand came on the heels of Federal Government's move to grant amnesty to the Boko Haram sect.

The activities of the illegal refinery operators had led to the shut down of AGIP operation in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area in Bayelsa State, just as they had reduced the daily production of petroleum products in the area.

Spokesman of the operators, White Tamama, in a statement yesterday, said they would continue the illicit trade until the Federal Government offered them amnesty and reparation or indemnification of property such as the refineries, boats, and houses being destroyed by the government.

"We are expecting government to encourage and complement us for coming up with this lucrative inventory skills to help government create millions of jobs for Nigerians across the globe. "Local refinery operators are the main agitators in Niger Delta region, the struggle is divided into two perspectives, the militants, and the oil refinery operators.

"The government has only succeeded in identifying with militants, but not knowing that we are stronger than militants. "The government mistake us to be militants. We are different from militants; that is why amnesty to the militant cannot stop the activities of oil bunkering and local refinery operations."
