At that conference, the Inspector General of Police, Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar, represented by AIG Solomon Arase who is in charge of intelligence gathering, said the country should step up intelligence networking in order to be able to track information to help them tackle the seemingly entrenched terrorism in the country.
The IG said the country needs a highly professionalized police force backed with modern communication system and intelligence power if they are to be to face the terror groups.
“To address the many security problems in the country, there is dire need for a professional police force,” he said.
He listed the root causes of terrorism as hunger, joblessness amongst the active population, absence of basic necessities of life and inability of many young Nigerians to attend school because of shortage of finances.
He called for the strengthening of the judiciary to ensure speedily trial of terror.
Similarly, commandant of Armed Forces Command and Staff College Jaji, Air Vice Marshal Eko Osim, represented by Director of Maritime Warfare, Commodore AT John said the aims of terrorist groups anywhere are basically economic and political, emphasising that there is need to identify those behind suspected terrorist groups and diffuse their capability through superb intelligence gathering.
Prof Ifeanyi Onyeonoru, director of Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies in the University of Ibadan said there is need for proper redistribution of national wealth as a way to addressing this security problem.
Professor Oshita oshita, director of Research and Policy Analysis Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution in the Presidency canvassed social re-engineering and police-military synergy as well as total reform of the security sector.
Principal Officer for Specialized Research and Planning, Inter-Government Action Group against Money Laundering in West Africa, Dakar, Dr Jeffrey Isima called for tighter financial measures to check sponsors of terrorism who move cash within and outside the country easily.
