Just one week after this baby was born, suspected Fulani herdsmen invaded their community in Mbalaagh Council Ward… the North Bank area of Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue State and murdered her mother, Felicia Asongo.

She was lucky to have been smuggled away from the crisis by her grandmother during the attack in which 27 people were allegedly killed. She is now being fed with baby milk under the watchful eyes of her aged grandmother.

Now her entire Mbalaagh Community made up of over 200 members have been in hiding for the past two weeks…sleeping under trees after the gruesome invasion. The baby’s uncle, Abraham who eventually found her mother’s corpse and buried it hurriedly in the night for fear of being attacked again by the herdsmen, narrated to The Sun about what may have prompted the attack.

“We only complained that their cows were destroying our farms and in the process of driving them away, the Fulani herdsmen came and attacked us. We did not have any problem with them before.

I want to go back home, but I am afraid to go because we don’t know if these Fulani herdsmen will attack us again. They have destroyed everything we had; our compound, our farm, our foodstuffs. They’ve destroyed everything.”

There has been a long, ongoing crises between the Tivs and the Fulanis. The Tivs are predominantly farmers who become irked when the cattle belonging to the Fulanis who are predominantly herdsmen destroy their farmland.

The Secretary of the Miyette Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Benue State Branch, Garus Gololo, lamented about the crises saying that the Tivs also kill his people too. With some unscrupulous people benefiting from the Tiv/Fulani crises by stealing 300 cows at a time whenever there is a fight. he said:

“The problem is affecting everybody. We need the Tivs to farm so that we can have food and we also need the Fulanis to graze their cows so that there can be enough meat for all.”

The baby who is now 3 weeks old is yet to be given a name.http://i1.wp.com/sunnewsonline.com/new/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/baby-no-mum.jpg?resize=584%2C286
