The Army yesterday in Warri, Delta State, inaugurated a special military force, tagged: Quick Response Group (QRG), aimed at checking the influx of Boko Haram insurgents into the Niger Delta.
The QRG will also combat militant groups, illegal bunkering, kidnapping and other criminal activities, which are threatening the fragile peace in the region.
The Commander of the 4 Brigade, Brig-Gen Pat Akem, who inaugurated the force, said it was part of the ‘Iron Fence’ security mechanism being deployed by the Federal Government to tackle insecurity in the country.
He said: “After analysing the security situation in the state, we decided that we need to do something to stem the tide.
“This is part of the Iron Fence deployed to prevent Boko Haram from infiltrating this area.
“Let me warn that the Federal Government has signaled that it will not tolerate development of militant camps in the Niger Delta,” he added.
The new group is made up of troops from the 3, 222 and 19 battalions, who are expected to man strategic routes, such as the Eku-Orerokpe-Osubi-Effurun Road, Obiaruku-Abraka-Amukpe and Warri-Ughelli-Patani Road.
Gen Akem, who received 12 Toyota Hilux vans donated by the Delta State Government, said the QRG would mount checkpoints to prevent the movement of criminals, arms and ammunition into the area.
He appealed to traditional rulers, community chiefs and clan heads to ensure that their communities are not used as criminal hide-outs.
“Henceforth, if we come to community where illegal bunkering is thriving, we will arrest elders of that community.
“ So if any community head notices criminal activities in his area they should notify us,” he said.
The Secretary to the State Government, Ovouzorie Macaulay, who represented Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, said the donation was to combat crimes.
He said the government has permitted security operatives to demolish any house that is used for criminal activities.
Macaulay warned landlords to ensure that they keep tabs on their tenants.
“No home should be used to harbour criminals and kidnap victims, because if we find out we shall demolish the building.”
