The 36-year-old man was using a hired body board when the predator struck at him twice.
Another swimmer, who saw the sea turn red with blood, scrambled out of the water to alert emergency services.
The unnamed man, who was on honeymoon with his new wife, was rescued from the sea but had lost so much blood that he died on the beach.
His wife, who had been sunbathing on the beach, went into shock following the tragedy at Saint-Gilles in Reunion Island.
A spokesman for the island’s tourist office said: “She’s being treated for severe shock. The surfer suffered bites to the right arm and hand, and the right thigh.”
